In regards to the "What Kind of Music Do You Wish Existed" thread (sort of), i found this passage from The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil.

There is already one technology that appears to generate at least one aspect of a spiritual experience. This experimental technology is called Brain Generated Music (BGM), pioneered by NeuroSonics, a small company in Baltimore, Maryland...BGM is a brain-wave biofeedback system capable of evoking an experience called the Relaxation Response, which is associated with deep relaxation. The BGM user attaches three disposeable leads to her head. A PC then monitors the user's brain waves to determine her unique alpha wavelength. Alpha waves, which are in the range of 8-13 cycles per second, are associated with a deep meditative state, as compared to beta waves (13-28 cps) which are associated with routine concious thought. Music is then generated by the computer, according to an algorithm that transforms the user's own brain-wave signal.

So soon, we'll all probably be able to download or purchase software that will have the ability to inspire the meditative state by recording and synthesising our brain wave patterns (oh yes, you can record the brain music for later listening!). Howz about that?

I remember reading about a company providing a fairly cheap brainwave scanner (about $2000) that read brainwave patterns and converted it into graphics on the PC screen. The drawback was that for most normal people the image created were fairly random - not surprising given it was just a scanner and most peoples brainwaves are fairly random. Apparently meditation practitioners were able to control their brainwaves better.
However the thing that really impressed me was that it was possible to get a midi interface - now that would be cool if you rigged up a synth or sampler to it. This was about four years ago.
I remember thinking - I want one of those!

You may be thinking of the IBVA (www.ibva.com). I'm semi-saving for one...unless I can figure out how to build it first.
