From the article:

David Cartwright, head at Francis Askew Primary School, says that staff have been working hard to ensure that children understand that what they have seen is not just make-believe.

"Children are used to the re-set button on a video game. They can see a car crash and then it starts again. In games people get another life."

Mr Cartwright says there is a danger that this can "de-sensitise" children when they see a real-life event on television, such as the images of the attack on the World Trade Center.

"Television is an entertainment medium for children", he says, and when news appears on the same screen children do not necessarily understand the difference.

Ouch.

I had a severe period a couple of years ago where I was playing Quake a lot, and because I was using Win95 I had to keep saving it for the inevitable crash. At it's extreme point whenever something bad happened in my life my instinctive reaction was "Damn, must reload" before i remembered the difference between real life and games.

Actually there's a big difference... in a game, you've got a little control.

Personally, I think the thing here isn't games/life... it's movies/life. Hollywood has dreamed of this moment and the dream came true. Problem is they kept dreaming decent actors for President.

where the hell is harrison ford?

Vince McMahon should be president. He cuts promos a million times better than W.

Do young children EVER know the difference though? I'm pretty sure I didn't when I was 6 - the News was just boring stuff, whereas Transformers wasn't.

I suppose it's one of those things you learn as you grow up and begin to learn which bits of TV happen in your world, and which bits don't..

It seems slightly sick to show a classroom full of kids disaster footage and say to them "lots of people died, be upset, damn you!"
