In defence of Igor Kordey

I love his work. Just read NEWXMEN124 and contrary to what many of you think it was superb IMVHO. The dying Smasher, the fight scene Pheonix-Mantra, the androgyne blackandwhite twin superhero - everything done with a strong sense of drama (over detail - YES). Some panels have seemed rushed in the past, but here it all works (maybe except the final one).

Not as good as Quitely, mind you.

See, I have trouble slagging anyone who can draw better than me. And in that respect, Mr. Kordey deserves my respect. But there were a few panels in 124 that were terrible. I'll dig up specific references later. I think he's got a style that's unique, but I think his and Mr. Quitely's styles are too disimilar to work well together on this book. I've heard nothing but praise for his Cable work, but then it's just him. I think the argument against him is less about his art and more about his juxtaposition on the book with FQ.

Evil Zoom.

Maybe it should be noted that I also absolutely adore the talented Jill Thompson's art.

Not, one assumes, to be confused with the daubings of the untalented Jill Thompson...

look, kordey is shite. full fuckin stop. It bewilders me how anyone who has any aesthetic sensibilities could possibly like what this guy is doing with the xmen. Quite Frankly (hah) its an abomination. He should be ashamed to put his name to such guff.

Truly awful. enda fuckin story.

wake up - kordey is ruining this title.

S'okay, though. 127 looks as though it'll be pretty, and Kordey only gets 2 more issues (this time a complete story-arc, and, hopefully, w/ a little bit more time to pull them outta the bag, so the art shouldn't completely suck) before Frank returns for 5. Fuckin'. Issues.

Fal-doo-ray!

And it's back!
[Image turned into a link by Arthur Sudnam, II, because it's only sort of back...]

I saw this picture (the cover to Soldier X #2) in the new Previews and was quite impressed to discover that it was by Ol' Igor. I think that, if Kordey is given the time to do so, he's probably capable of producing some really beautiful work.

I think Igor Kordey is a very talented illustrator, my main point of contention is that I think he's horribly inappropriate for New X-Men. Even still, in spite of botching some crucial scenes in Imperial and Germ Free Generation, having some major difficulties drawing aliens and space ships, and making Jean and Logan nearly unrecognizable; there's still a lot of pages in his NXM issues which I really like looking at just cos they look nice.

I was looking at his Black Widow comic the other day, and I thought it was very nicely drawn - I think his niche is drawing things like that and Cable - I could imagine him drawing a very good Punisher comic. He's good at spies, soldiers, crime noir, etc. Big sci-fi epics is NOT his thing.

If you like his painted artwork, you might be interested in checking out the Storm graphic novel he's working on with Chris Claremont whenever that comes out.

I like Igor Korday a lot, but he really suffers when he is rushed, as is obvious on his NXM stuff. And yeah, this may not be his genre. So far, the best Korday I've ever seen has been his Tarzan stuff for Dark Horse, including a real swell Tarzan/Batman miniseries. Check that stuff out- it's probably all in the quarter bin.

I just realized today that that whole 'ugly stick' aesthetic Zoom mentioned in the New X-Men #128 thread [being that which I probably most appreciate about Kordey's art (when he's not pencil-whipping, that is)] also quite readily applies to Rick Veitch's work. How do those of you in the "We Hate Kordey" camp feel about Veitch's stuff?

To revive the thread:

I was recently talking to an artist friend, and he mentioned that Kordey didn't actually do some of that work and he subbed it out to "ghost" artists. This would definitely explain a lot of the inconsistency... I'm not sure if this has been mentioned around here before, since I'm pretty sure Ethan or someone else would have heard about it. It's not a practice that's advertised usually, though.
