Online Comics Club

One of the barriers in having a thriving comics forum is that we all have different tastes, and therefore our interests don't often coincide, the exception being Morrison's work. i once counted up the amount of people who post on the comics forum in one month, and it numbered 50. Of those 50, probably only 30-35 posted regularly. With this in mind, I'm actually surprised that even two people responded to my Mad Magazine thread.

Nothing at all wrong with the above, just that it makes it hard to have an in-depth conversation about any but a few comics. Take the proposed Watchmen reading club. I, like probably a few people, don't own Watchmen, and I'm not about to buy a copy when I still have Alley Oop reprints and Astro Boy reprints left to buy.

What I'm proposing is that we have a regular comic reading club, one in which we can get our material from the web. There are an awful lot of good comics out there, from brand new work to reprints of the classics. Just today I found a site that posts whole stories by Alex Toth, one page, one day at a time.

Would anyone else be interested in this?

I'd be up for something like that. This is really the only place I discuss comics, but I do the majority of my posting from work and seldom get the chance to contribute to any threads really aside from a few offhand comments. I appreciate the work that you've been putting into this forum, moriarty, and the interesting things that you post. I haven't thought about MAD magazine really for years, not to mention good old 'bazooka joe'. So yeah, count me in.

Yeah, for me this is the only place I have to discuss comics. I'd be in. It'd be a good way to get into online comics.

Sounds fun. What kind of online comics are we talking about?

This here pauper thinks it's a fine idea. The only comics I can afford to look at of late are the ones I'm drawing myself. There is indeed a mass of great stuff on the web; several URLs are already springing eagerly to mind (although I'd be damn surprised if Moriarty isn't already au fait with them). In for a pound, then.

Sure. This sounds super. Could you post some links to the comics you're referring to, moriarty?

Cool. It is true that immediately after invix posted the first response I went ahead and made a huge fucking list of online comic contenders (and knock it off, invix. you're making me blush).

There are a few things we must consider. First, how often should we do this? Since these are going to be things that can be read in a very short period of time, I figure going a month between readings might be too long a wait. On the other hand, much as I might want to go full steam ahead, weekly might be a little too much too soon. So, unless we discover that it would work otherwise, I suggest a bi-weekly schedule. And I figure each comic profiled should have it's own thread.

Second, we should decide who will choose the comics. I don't mind doing it, but I also don't want to come off as a controlling asshole. So, our options are that I choose all the stories, we take turns somehow, or picks are chosen but must be passed by me first. Like I said, I'm easy, and we can always change our minds.

Third, in the event that anybody can choose comics, we have to set parameters for what type of comic to include. After inspecting a number of sites, here's what I've come up with. Any type of story or genre is allowable, from serious experiments in comic literature, to classic comic strip reprints, to pop culture explorations, to superhero comics from the Golden Age, and so on. The majority, however, will be stories originally done for the internet. All stories should be complete, or if they're not (for example, a continuity strip that will never end) then a good sample of strips within the overall story should be cited as our focal point. Gag strips may be used, but it's possible that they may be troublesome since they very rarely have an overarching narrative.

I might contact a few select people who don't normally notice the comics forum, or even post something in the Conversation, even though I hate shilling like that. I think it would be nice to get a variety of voices involved in this, and it would only cost them a few minutes of their time.

Lastly, I'm pissed because I have found some pieces of comic beauty that are unsuitable for this because they are not yet finished. It's driving me nuts, they're so good.

As a relative stranger to the medium, at the moment, although having been online for five years I've never developed the habit of looking at online comics, I guess I like the feel of them in my hand. This is something I'm looking forward to discussing and breaking through in the readings. Anyway, ramble over, on those grounds I'd be happy to let yourself pick.

You're not going to leave it at that are you? Go on, give us a hint...

Yes, linkage please. Biweekly sounds pretty good. This should be a lot of fun.

Also, I'd like to recommend we take a good look at 'godshead'. It's right up our alley, subject matter-wise, and the writers/artists (nico, impulsivelad) are/have been actual participants on this board.

And I'm looking forward to dissecting all of those 'shifter stories' from the collective comics project when it comes out...

No, I'm not going to name the strips I mentioned. Not until they're done, at least. I'm a jerk like that.

So far as talking about the work of people on this board, at first I thought I was hesitant to do this because I didn't want to hurt their feelings. Then I realized that the reason I didn't want to do that was because more often then not we've already had threads devoted to those comics, or, in the case of the Shifter project, we will in the future.
