Pimp via Audiogalaxy?

Just poking about Audiogalaxy, and it seems that it's possible to start a group, to which others can join. Members of the group can send songs to one another - a direct hit on the song pimping vein. Anyone up for this? Seems like a nifty little idea. I'm setting something up one way or another - whether it's a Barbelith pimping group will be determined by interest here...

I'm in. Add me to your list - I'm perpetuam. Just giving that a look-through, I didn't notice anything about how you'd know who in the group was sending you what - is there some part of the application that makes you aware of this sort of thing?

I'd just want to know; cos if I had, I don't know, Rizla sending me live versions of Bright Eyes songs over and over again, I'd just want to know who was inflicting that particular torture on me.

And likewise if it was something that was fantastic...

Yeah, I don't know if there's any way to see the origin of songs that end up on yer drive - probably through the Audiogalaxy page, somewhere. Will have to test it out.

I'd be up for it. (assuming anybody likes my song picks)

Appy polly loggies if this post should be in the wrong place, but did anyone here have lots of troubles logging on to audiogalaxy? I've never got it to work (I get a server timeout every time), and all I hear is Audiogalaxy this and Audiogalaxy that, the song-pimpin' mother lode...

For someone who is a virgin to the whole concept of downloading music and stuff, what do you lot recommend as a good place to start? Are these places still free? Problems? Reliability etc?

J-Wemb and Loz', the dope on Audiogalaxy:

Yeah, sometimes it's down, or weird, or just MIA. There's times when I just can't hit the main page; don't know if it's a dodgy server or what, but it does go up and down. But it's also the most convenient Windows-based file-sharing service around right now, so it's worth it. There's no Mac version, and that's the big downside. Dunno why, but I think it's got something to do with the ad scheme that supports it, becuase they use Gator and the like to keep the software free.

You have to d/l a small satellite program that runs in the background; song selection is done via their web page, but the satellite is what actually does the downloading work. So that's pretty easy, but the caveat is the advertising, some of which is done in a pretty underhanded way. So after installing the satellite, go to Lavasoft and get their Ad-Aware app. It's small, and will remove the more dubious ad schemes bundled with the satellite, rendering it OK to use. I'm extremely cautious about what I install on my machine, and this has been fine once the ads are gone.

As I've said before, Mac users should go for LimeWire, which is of a similar level of user-friendliness and has a comparable song library to Audiogalaxy.

There IS a Mac version of Audiogalaxy that's going around - it's not officially endorsed by the Audiogalaxy site just yet, but they unofficially approve of it, and it works.

not sure how audiogalaxy works - but LimeWire is gnutella based- true peer to peer networking - which to my there IS no song list... or am i wrong?

The Mac port of Audiogalaxy's app (MacSatellite?) is a bag of shite. Then again, I'm behind a firewall, but that doesn't change that much once you tinker around; it doesn't seem to be much chop.

Limewire is OK - but if you have access to a PC, I think Audiogalaxy's a better pick.

And guess who now has a desktop PC for work that's just begging to be filled with MP3s...

So Flux, Gridley, Roth, wembley (you can do it, J!) -- there's gotta be more. I'll wait a bit longer before I set anything up. Anyone got speculations on a name? The League of Extraordinary Song Pimps seems a bit long to me...

I'd call it the Barbelith Song Pimping Club. heck, why mess with perfection?

I'd be up for this... but first I need to reinstall audiogalaxy. Just as I got it they upgraded it, so I went to king-of-spyware KazAa, or however it's capitalized.

Let's do it! Do I have to leave my satellite on all the time?

I've just been going with Gnucleus for the moment (no ads), but every time I download the sattelite it times out on me after the 90 seconds. It may have something to do with a firewall, but in any case it makes me bitter as heck.

OK - the Barbelith Song Pimpin' Club it is. This now exists, with me as the one lonely member. Doesn't look like I can add members myself, so you need to go here and ask to join, at which point I will say yes, and all this foolishness can begin.

And wembly, if you can't manage to d/l the satellite, perhaps I can get it to you via FTP.

Oh, and no, Casemaker, you don't have to leave the satellite on all the time. If we try to send something and yer not on, it'll just queue up and be sent when next you run the satellite.
