Sorry I haven't been able to give feedback on Saturday night earlier than this. Net access is limited, so I have to write out anything long and complicated at work and bring it back on disc (real pain in the arse).

It was a bit of a mixed result, to be honest. On the positive side, the evening was a good laugh, kinda low-key but with a good vibe. Everyone I spoke to said they really enjoyed themselves, even those who wouldn't usually listen to that kind of music. Plus there were a few people who made some good new friends and/or useful future connections (myself included).

On the downside, things did not go at all well with the venue or the fund raising. The initial arrangement (only verbal. Trust me: there's been more than enough feeling stupid and kicking of ourselves to go around) was to pay a £200.00 deposit, which was refundable if we made more than £250.00 on the bar. In addition to this we would give the venue £1.00 for every person who came. About an hour into the evening, the bar manager disputed this arrangement had ever taken place and said that we needed to get 250 people clocked in on the door before the deposit could be refunded. Completely different kettle of fish. We ended up collecting around £300.00 on the door, having had 83 people pay. The venue refused to refund the deposit, we had no basis on which to argue, and we had to repay them £83.00 (we decided to stick to our side of the bargain, as a report had to be sent back to Save the Children concerning the success of the event. We reckoned it would be best to remain blameless rather than cause potential problems for the charity). The bar manager also called into question the validity of Nathalie's charity work, which shouldn't come to anything as she is fully registered with both Save the Children and I to I. The result? We broke even. The deposit was covered by the money made on the door, leaving no money for the charity. But least we didn't lose money. I have no idea whether the changes in the conditions of using the venue were an honest mistake on the part of the bar manager and owner, or whether they're just a vile bunch of diseased cunts. I could make a guess, but judge not lest ye be judged, eh?

So it was a big learning experience of how not to do things. We're considering taking further action, and there are a couple of avenues we can pursue. To begin with, there's the original verbal agreement, made over the telephone. The call was made from where Nathalie and I work, where every call is recorded. There's a slim chance that we might be able to locate the DAT backups and use this to get our deposit back, in which case just over £200.00 will have been raised. Or we could chalk the whole thing down to experience and just leave it. One thing that we're definitely going to do is write a detailed report back to Save the Children to let them know how it went (of course trying to make things as objective as possible). I guess it's up to them if they want to investigate further.

Thank you very much everyone for your support, whether you came on the night or projected us some good vibes. Nathalie and I want to say particular thanks to:

- Lyra Lovelaces for lending us his considerable music taste and deck skills. Best DJ set of the night.

- Will Wright, for being a sound bloke and travelling a long way. Really sorry you didn't get a chance to play out (hope you weren't too pissed off).

- Flyboy for letting us crash/store bags at his old flat. Hope the move goes well, mate.

- The Magickal Order of Barbelith for their time and effort in designing a sigil for the party, and Mixmage for delivering it. I wore it proudly on my shirt for the whole night. You guys are really kind and thoughtful. Do you have a newsletter so that non-members can be kept up to date with the workings you're doing that you don't kind making public? I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about the sigil and it's programming, if that's cool with you guys.

Many apologies for the lovely people who came and paid on the door to show their support. I am so sorry that things fucked up. I feel like we should pay you guys back (if only that were possible). You had faith in us and we let you down. Fucking humble pie, feel like a tit.

Finally (and on a positive note again), I haven't been deterred from future events one iota. I'm really up for putting on an event like this again, having learned from this experience. Less on the door (just enough to cover costs, maybe passing it to Barbelith running costs), no charity involvement which means we can pick more alternative venues (and make a decent fixed arrangement with the owners, ON PAPER). Would anyone else be up for it?

no worries, with no monitor or pre mix for the headphones, I'd of just been dropping tunes. Next time you'll be dancing to Da Shaman sound. lol

hey... my pleasure, expressionless.

sorry I had to bail, but it was only "chance" that plonked me in London that night - best way, really!

hmmmm... if you're up for more high-jinks and merriment, I may well be able to sort a totally chilled venue... probably just the right size too.

ahhh... summer... what a perfect opportunity!

I'm definitely interested in any venue details you have. PM them to me and I'll consider what the options are.

I'll do my best to make it to anything else you try to run, and sorry school work got in the way of this one.

I think you should stop feeling bad, expressionless. It sounds to me as if the bar manager was the tit... I should like to know how they proposed to fit 250 people into that space; 150, maybe, but 250? Not a chance, and probably against their fire regulations. Ha.

But on the brighter side, it was an excellent evening, and I think something that we could do elsewhere with a lot of success and fun. Best of luck with writing to Save the Children, to both you and Nathalie.

It's great that yr not deterred, expressionless. Honestly, my friends have been throwing nights on and off since we were 17. They started off a right disaster. Some of the highlights: 'The Crypt' in Hastings, a DJ fight, 18 yr old MCs going on about 'Oh my gosh, feel the rush!'; 'The Aquarium' on Old St and a terrible night called GROOVE, a name foisted on my best mate by his old "partner" and a non existent crowd; endless gigs promoted by a guy called Jeffrey where my friends would PA some bleepy noises to a big gang of exactly no-one. And a very similar experience to yours, but this time in Gerard St.

But things are more than hunkydory now. The Twart's just managed to book a very big (and very good) name for his night in Brighton, and the night's even shown up in the Guardian and the crowds are swelling, etc... At first you might have to be prepared to take some kind of loss, but persevere. At least yr looking to throw a few events in London where people actually know something about music (you may scoff, or accuse me of snobbyness, but it's so hard to get a draw if the punters are left scratching their heads: 'What type of music? Fuck knows who they are... Are they on Skint? [cheap shot, sorry. But sometimes that's how it feels]'

God, it's so satisfying when it works!

I'll come to the next one - get Lyra to DJ again, cause I have a feeling he's tres gooood.

Arrgh, sorry Ex, to hear that. And sorry we didn't make it. We set out to, but things kinda went in another direction.

Thanks for arranging a great night seth, had a really great time and got chance to meet a lot of top people, yourself included, my girlfriend said it was the best night she's had out for ages, and it's good that your gonna great straight back in the saddle and organise something else. I think the charity will understand how 'business like' most venue owners are and will just be glad you've got them a bit of publicity through the obvious amount of hard work that you put in. Hello to everybody I spoke to that night, especially memebugerer-had a good laugh.

Can't wait for the next meet...

Ack, is a shame that the venue were being twattish, but good on you for wanting to get back on with it. Is totally true that you've learned loads of stuff that will come in useful for the next time. (and Runce is right about having to make some mistakes to learn how to do things right. who's the big name, Runce, you can tell me )

I had a great time, and most of the people here seem to have done, so once you find a decent place things will probably kick off...

Was gooood stuff, exp. Well-played to you for not popping the manager's head off when fronted with such fucktardery, coincidentally. Hopefully, there's going to be some uncoiling of organisational tangles in times to come - the next one will rock very, very hard indeed, I feel.

Although talkative I was not (where did the night go?), I did have a good time. Big cheers to Lyra, too - that was good.

What's the name of the venue so I can avoid giving them my custom in future?

(It's not just called the Islington Bar, is it?)

I wouldn't avoid the venue in future because of one rough incident. I appreciate they've got to make a living, and the turnout wasn't what we'd hoped for. Whatever: we won't getthe desposit back, so I figure the best we can do is report back to the charity and send a copy of the DAT if we can locate it (if it exists. Trust my employers to cut all possible costs by purchasing the most temperamental call recording package available).

I'm really glad so many people enjoyed themselves.

Expressionless. Many, many, many apologies I couldn't make it, and - in light of the attitude of the venue owner - I'm feeling kinda guilty (my £6 probably wouldn't have made a difference, but I'm still going to punish myself by thinking it would).

On a lighter note, have you considered - if planning to do another - a venue in Brighton? It's close enough to London that it doesn't prove problematic transport wise, and the venues are by-and-large much cheaper (and, I'd hasten to add, the venue owners probably a mite fairer). We ran a party up here a fortnight ago which pulled in about 50 people. All the venue asked for was £30 to employ a private barman for the night.

yeah, but breaking your agreement... put it this way, I wouldn't go back there to organise the next one. I'm not that sympathetic to venues in general, I've seen a lot of people fucked over by them.

Thanks to expressionless for the fun evening.

(My only wish is that I could remember who exactly I met. I remember most people, or at least their suit names, but I can't for the life of me remember who ended up in this house in Kentish Town apart from Pasha.) Ah well.

expressionless - my condolences on the lack of money making, though it sounded like everyone had a good time. the benefit event i organised in january did well because the venue was sympathetic to the cause and took nothing except the bar money. despite an utter tosser for a sound engineer, who demanded loads of cash and had no interest in what the night was about, we did alright, but only because the venue was free. whatever, get any agreements in writing - never trust anyone where money is concerned!

Well, I'm very very glad the experience hasn't put you off organising similar things in future, expressionless mate, because I had a great time, and believe it can only get better and bigger from here on in... Glad I could help out in some small way (by the way, has any of your or Nathalie's friends misplaced a zip-up sweater type thing?).

P.S. Barry - I was there (although I only really remember being presented with a small bottle of Jack Daniel's by the people who'd been to the offy, everything after that is fuzzy verging on blank), as was a friend of mine, and the people who live there... Hmmm, who else?

Cheers for the big ups, peeps. I enjoyed the night - good to meet gozer, will and lentil, only sorry I didn't get more time to mingle with all the busyness. Also top R&B dancefloor action with Plums, Kooky, Fly and Sleaze - props to everyone who danced to my set...

Expless - you know I'm up for more, as I said in my email, we just need to give a bit more thought to publicity and stuff next time...

It's blue and has the words "articles of faith" or something like that on it... and what looks like a couple of 'women' symbols holding hands. Can't think of who else it might belong to...
