word of mouth 'they knew months in advance!' conspiracies

I've heard a few of these in the past week, most shockingly from my Dad yesterday. Previously, his political inclination has been to take a straighter-than-straight Sunday Times-type stance, but then he suddenly announces "Ah, they knew about all this months in advance!"

His explanation for this is that he lives across the water from the semi-closed Milford Haven oil refineries, and last month noticed loads and loads of tankers coming and going, and lots of flames and smoke coming from chimneys when, strictly speaking, there shouldn't be any (to be fair, I noticed this at the time too, as did many other people).
"See, they knew something was going to happen that could restrict oil supplies!" he says.

I'm slightly worryed by the number of these dubious theories going around .. especially when hearing them from people who normally wouldn't touch conspiracies with a barge-pole.
And especially when, dispite the myriad absurdities involved, they start to seem more plausible - there have been a lot more military helicopters and funny looking aircraft than usual flying around Pembrokeshire this summer..

Anyone heard any other stories?

Yeah, but after my mother's post-Diana lapse into conspiracy mindset ("MI5 must be behind it; somebody that famous doesn't just die by accident") I'm no longer surprised by it. It's basically a psychological defence against having to consider the power of scary randomness within the world; that and a jigsaw-like obsession with 'filling the gaps', whether or not the pieces actually fit.

It's the urge to make conspiracy theories isn't it, feel so insecure in your own life that you have to come up with a grand reason as to why the Government is making you wet your bed on alternate Tuesdays.

alternately, it could be because the US government will stop at nothing to maximize its control over the world and create a culture of war to increase its power. but i guess that's just wild speculation, isn't it.
