US copyright law specifically allows brief excerpts of prose works to be reprinted without express written permission "for review purposes," while prohibiting all other unauthorized use. I imagine UK law is similar.
You're in the clear, I think, as long as you include a disclaimer somewhere in the text of the 'zine itself: it could be a line of text near each individual co-opted illustration--e.g., "Captain Doofus is (c) and TM Plaid Pyjama Publishing. All rights reserved"--or with a general disclaimer up front--"All copyrighted work herein remains the property of the respective copyright holders: excerpts are preseneted here for review purposes only." |
