should i change my user name??
i always try to get an idea of someone from their user name when i first see it. obviously reading a number of posts gives you a better idea, but everyone makes assumptions from a user name, me included, of course. i've had people on various messageboards assume i have problems with my identity, that i can't possibly be happy with who/what i am, because of my user name. people don't ask, they just think i must hate myself. cos you couldn't be a short, fat dyke and be happy, right? i am though. the name is kind of a joke - years ago, a psychiatrist, doing an assessment, made notes to that effect. my problems were all down to that, she said. i like being visibly lesbian, i use the word dyke because it feels strong to reclaim an insult. i want people to know i'm female.... when people make assumptions like the ones i've described above, are they projecting their own hatreds or prejudices? should i change my name to something more 'friendly'? |
