What's In A Name?

should i change my user name??

i always try to get an idea of someone from their user name when i first see it. obviously reading a number of posts gives you a better idea, but everyone makes assumptions from a user name, me included, of course. i've had people on various messageboards assume i have problems with my identity, that i can't possibly be happy with who/what i am, because of my user name. people don't ask, they just think i must hate myself. cos you couldn't be a short, fat dyke and be happy, right? i am though. the name is kind of a joke - years ago, a psychiatrist, doing an assessment, made notes to that effect. my problems were all down to that, she said. i like being visibly lesbian, i use the word dyke because it feels strong to reclaim an insult. i want people to know i'm female.... when people make assumptions like the ones i've described above, are they projecting their own hatreds or prejudices? should i change my name to something more 'friendly'?

I've always really liked your name, never thought of it as negative, just honest and powerful.

I know that your name gets you a lot of attention, not all of it good, and seems to produce a lot of misunderstandings, people thinking you aren't happy with yourself... also I think some people find you threatening - you must be, to be so 'out', right? But fuck 'em. Do whatever makes you happy... there is no shame in taking the easy route sometimes, letting people get to know you without giving them something they'll generally use to form a distinct opinion of you immediately... if you can't be arsed to fight that battle anymore, don't. But I think it is a worthy one, and I, for one, have always been proud of you, and impressed by your strength...

Has anybody ever told you you're my hero?

I'm with Chol. Change it if you feel like it, or you're bored of getting hassled by morons...but the only moron on Barbelith who did as you described, IIRC, was Mr. Knodge, and then Horus, who almost certainly is/was Mr. Knodge. So, hey...

If you feel comfortable with your name, then keep it. If you think it's putting up barricades in conversation, it could be worth changing it, or considering changing it. Although I guess that's where we take the Head Shop turn-off and start debating about why those barricades are in place, and how they're being constructed. And whether you should be accommodating their construction, or just saying "fuckya!".

Me, I don't change because I'm lazy, and my name implies some kind of suaveness that I don't actually possess.

If you don't have a problem with the name yourself (and I don't think you do) then fuck anyone else. Besides, apart from all the empowerment stuff, it's kind of snappy. And I get confused when people change their names all the time. And (my God!!!) I agree with Haus on this one- trolls don't dig it. And what higher praise can there be?

Only if you want to. If you want to know, I respected and liked your name right off the bat --straightforward and funny, and friendly to boot.
