Building Your Very Own Golem

Your conclusion is what I have read as far as work with Golems from other sources, and it seemed to make a lot of sense to me at the time. You're really creating a servitor, but using a model as focus. That's how I've understood it. The golem shifting you describe is what is claimed to occur when its active. I still think its all very creepy, but good show on the sucessful evocation!

Okay. I'm not a good Jew. I'm not even a practicing Jew. There were no rabbis in my family, let alone practical Kabbalists...just truck drivers.

In the traditional sense - I'd don't know how Christian, Golden Dawn (goyim)magicians revamp this - to build a "golem" is to create form without spirit: Only G-d can create a being with both form and spirit. Indeed, the word golem implies half of a whole. This is why the golem, has such limited cognizance and understanding...hence the threat that they will overkill on whatever task they are commanded to do, as is repeated in legends, over and over. It is hypothetically possible that one could create spirit without flesh, thus a golem in that half-of-a-whole sense, but this entity would not correspond to conventional ideas of ghosts, servitors, etc. because it would have no point in interaction with the material.

As a good little monolaterist, I think it's quite possible you've done something other than create a golem in the pukka sense. Sounds more like a fetish-servitor, in the Central/East African sense.

you can create a Golem with a ruah (animal spirit) and a nefesh...but you can't add the neshamah (higher soul)...only God can do that.

Actually, in Judaism, God isn't omnipotent or even omniscient. He's just some powerful spirit dude.

So whatever God does others can do.

And how does one make a golem?

I understand the

Get play-doh or clay
make person out of it

But I don't know the other procedures.

MO - NO - LA -TE - RIST

but impulsivelad didn't mentioned some other god being involved.

And I said I was a bad Jew to start with, so *nyah!* [sticks tongue out]

Jocularity aside, my point was that by practical Kabbalah definition, a golem, being matter animated by a ruah (had to go look that one up, my Hebrew is pretty rough-and-ready):

1. Has no consciousness, thus no capacity to interpret commands.
2. Has no spiritual capacities or powers: it achieves ends via physical means.

Which is why I counter-proposed the term fetish for your Play-Doh construct, in that fetishes are animated by a spiritual power, move on their own, possess a form of consciousness capable of understanding and interpreting comple commands.

re: the Fool's comment on using the word 'blood'

The idea is that you start out with a potent word (truth, Adam) that activates the golem, and by erasing part of the word, you end up with another word (dead, blood, mud, etc.) that no longer has the power to animate the golem, and converts it back to base matter.

re: books on Kabalah

I always recommend Colin Low's FAQ and related articles at http://www.digital-brilliance.com/kab/index.html

Honestly speaking, if it doesn't start moving around then it's a failure. It's supposed to move around and do stuff physically. It's su[pposed to physically bring you a dollar. That would make the golem a success.

See what you've done? You've made me save up money for Play-Doh!

impulsive: I swear, I don't know about this whole golem thing, but your experiments certainly make for interesting reading.

Lionheart- Honestly speaking, if it doesn't start moving around then it's a failure.

Agreed, which is why in my conclusion I was sorta leaning towards a more fetish-y explanation like Monkey said. But:

cusm- Your conclusion is what I have read as far as work with Golems from other sources.

I too have come across this in my readings, so maybe what I created was just one version (of probably many versions) of Golem.
