Das Experiment

Anyone else seen this? ZoCher and I saw it in Edinburgh a few weeks back; it's German, a fictionalised modern-day reworking of Dr Philip Zimbardo's notorious 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment. Basically, it's a now-classic psychology experiment exploring the development of sadism within a one-sided power dynamic.

Zimbardo's experiment had to be abandoned after only a few days, as the 'guards' quickly began abusing the 'prisoners's basic human rights. 'Das Experiment' speculates on what would've happened if the study had run a little longer...

It's extremely violent, not quite as deep as it thinks it is, but oddly compelling - or not so oddly if your sexual fantasies involve shaven-headed men behind bars . The fact that it's set in Germany adds another dimension, the ever-present spectre of Nazism - although I don't think anyone actually calls anyone else a Nazi until quite near the end. Worth seeing.

Were people talking about this on Barbelith before, I've heard of it from somewhere, sounds good though...

I saw it and had pretty much exactly the same reaction to it as you have - that it was interesting, not as clever as it thought it was, vaguely sexually titilating and scarily entertaining. The weakest part of it for me (as a film) was that there seemed to be no ending. It was a question of escalation only - I was desperate for some kind of denouement, some kind of dramatic conclusion, confrontation, ideological battle, revelation about the various parties, twist, etc. But instead all they could think of to do was to up the tension with more violence... Which wasn't disasterous, but kept the whole film at a slightly lower level than it could have achieved.

So, vaguely enjoyable, eh? I saw a trailer for this a while ago, and thought it looked decidedly shitbox - can't say why, but it came across as hackneyed effort, even from the small amount of footage I saw. What was it like in terms of production?

Are you talking about one film? Because it's also going to be a reality TV show on the BBC

I did write a piece about the BBC show onmy blog, but it seems to have vanished.

Apparently the TV show will be coming on the BBC soon - but also had to be abandoned.
