Does anyone know what the first 'Robin Hood' story was? In terms of novels and so on? Is there a definitive one, an 'Ivanhoe' for Sherwood Forest?

I think, mediaeval English ballads... this list seems pretty comprehensive, and says that The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle is 'most often recommended'. Not forgetting 'Locksley Hall"...
