Yes yes yes.
GZA has a new album coming out this year and I just picked up the first (that I know of) single from it.
It's called Fame and it's very fucking good.
The house influences in RZA's production that were bubbling under on 'Iron Flag' and 'Bulletproof Wallets' really come to the fore here - the most comparable track is "Ghost Showers" in terms of how obvious that influence is. The track kicks in with about 8 bars of just beats, which is very unusual for hip hop, but standard for house or techno. The beat is very stripped and heavy - almost reminiscent of the kind of breaks used in big beat records but without the distortion - it sounds like straight-up 909, i.e. a very house sound - simple but punchy. So that sets it up. Then a big ol' clangy piano riff comes in. Again, piano riffs do not equal house, but when you hear it you'll maybe see what I mean. Think '93 italo-piano type stuff. Theres just something about the beats-piano progression on the track that's very house.
Finally the vocal kicks in.
"They was told not to ride in Patty's +Hearse+
and stay out of Charles' +Manson+
Took Abraham's +Lincoln+ through the Todd +Bridges+ espansion
Willis +Reid+s a map that marks the spot showin
On his left George +Burns+ a blunt William's holdin"
And my favourite bit:
"Water dripped outta Farrah's +Faucette+ in the glass
She was "Superfly", Curtis +Mayfield+ her ass
Chris +Tucker+ to a show, Ted +Turner+ to a hoe
Robert +Dicks+ the beat, but ain't feelin the flow
But he signed it fast, for half of Johnnie's +Cash+"
Ha!
Everybody done forgot about GZA. I think this is utter genius (scuse the pun) not least because it manages to be very inventive but also a straight club banger (normally when the Wu make a club track they dumb their shit right down - cf Gravel Pit).
Anybody know when the album's out? Anybody heard it?
Note: this record will be played on saturday. Possibly more than once. |
