So as I understand it, Bush has called up 5000 (or was it 50,000? that might make more sense) 'reservists'.

What exactly are they gonna be going?

Seems like rather a lot to just help out at the disaster areas.

Reservists are the US equivalent of the Territorial Army in the UK, yeah?

reservists are people who are in the military -- all branches -- part time. they get trained, get on a career track, and then just show up like once a week or once a month to maintain training. they normally are just regular citizens with non-military careers. But once they're called in for an operation, they're full time for the conflict.

i imagine the territorial army of britain is closer to our National Guard, a division of the military who defends us borders full time. they've already been mobilized to new york since 9/11

It is indeed 50,000. With possibly more to be called to active duty in the very near future.
Most of the reservists (part-time soldiers)being called to full-time duty in this initial wave are "specialists." I assume that to mean engineers, mechanics, doctors, firefighters, and others with special training that might aid the relief efforts in NYC and D.C.
All of the 50,000 will reportedly be assigned to domestic duties (media emphasizing this is NOT a prelude to war, merely a necessary step to try to deal with the literal and figurative fallout of the terrorist actions).

At work today, I... ahem... accidentally noticed that our manager has just received an 'Information For Employers' pack from the MOD about reservists and call-up.

A friend who's in the TA mentioned a few weeks ago that they were going to be on 30-day call-up starting in November for possible deployment to Kosovo, but the appearance of this info pack seems a little... timely?

Let us know when he gets the pack about civilians and call-up.

When and if that happens you'll be lucky to ever hear from me again.
