Argentine President Duhalde: 'The Falklands are ours; we will get them back'

President Eduardo Duhalde reiterated Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands in a ceremony paying tribute to the lives lost fighting Britain for control of the islands 20 years ago.

"The Malvinas (Falklands) are ours. We will get them back," Duhalde said Tuesday before a crowd of 3,000, many of whom fought in the war against the British, in the town of Ushuaia, 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) south of Buenos Aires.

"The Malvinas are ours, soaked with the tears and the blood of our heroes," he said of the thousands who, under the direction of Argentina's military leader Leopoldo Galtieri, lost a 74-day battle with Britain for control of the windswept South Atlantic archipelago. Among the dead were 648 Argentines and 255 Britons.

I don't know what the Falkland Islanders will have to say about that - I read an article about them recently that said that most of them were getting happily rich on squid profits; and there's scarcely an Argentine sympathiser, even, on the islands... Is this really more than posturing, do you think?

Well, seeing as the official currency in Argentina is now the yellow M&M I don't see it being more than posturing. I can't remember who but someone said sarcastically that Argentina have a lot of work to do before their country is in the kind of ruined state that breads fascism...

well traditionally the best way out of a recession is a war...

Didn't we have our recession after the falklands war? Oh, hang on, we had one before as well.
And you don't need total decline to breed a fascist state - look at Thatcher.

After the comments in the guardian the other day from one of the British heads of staff who said 'if the Argentine troops had held on for another week before surrendering, they'd have had us', I'm really hoping it's posturing.

But if not, we'll have 'em!

Don't really see what relevance fascism has here...

After the redefinition of the word terrorist, I'm suprised Bush hasn't dropped a nuke on them this morning just to make sure. After all, he can't rely on just Chretien to lick his ass clean.

I'm guessing it's just posturing... but then, posturing can, and often does, lead on to more serious things. Glad Thatcher's effectively silenced right now, though.
And as far as posturing goes, "Mr Tony" seems to be learning all about that worryingly fast from Bush...

i've been watching documentaries about the war and all those horrible memories came flooding back. what struck me was the way the attitude of the press and the government completely managed to wash (nearly) everyone away in a sea of jingoism. it seemed to cheer people up, which was, of course, the point of it all. i think if a similar situation happened now, the public would be far more questioning/cynical about our need for bloodshed and we certainly wouldn't have kids queuing to join up and 'do their bit' - see the difference in people's attitudes to the falklands and the more recent gulf war and bombing of afghanistan.
