Washington Post. Rest of the story here, and it's not pretty.

Also, I apologise for creating another thread, as I just saw similar discussion in the "vile responses" thread. Je m'excuse.

Why are these people (Falwell, Robertson) considered Christians?

They seem completely unaware of the key features of Christ's teaching. The whole vengeful spiteful God schtick is pure pre christian, part of the common heritage with Judaism and Islam.

Perhaps they are muslim fundamentalist in disguise. (this is a comedic remark)

Go read the sermon on the mount. Then pray for grace.

Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson are about as representative of Christianity as Bin Laden is of Islam. They are using this opportunity to attempt to frighten already scared and uninformed people to their view and push their agendas.

The fact that they don't see it's in criminally poor taste is an indication of their fundementalist short-sightedness and narrow mindedness, as well as their inability to make an appropriate statement to address a tragedy.

These people are not Christians. They are hucksters pushing their own hateful brand of religion and using this tragedy to win converts and more importantly donations.

I couldn't agree more... however, I find myself wondering about the significance of their following. I'm not in the US, but I do hear an awful lot of hearsay about the Bible Belt. Is there a relatively large group of people or an area that could be swayed by such arguments? I recognise that they represent a very extreme and twisted version of religious faith, but how many people out there, in their confusion and fear, are likely to agree?

Enough. Or, Too Much.

Wiiliam Blake said that while writing his proverbs of hell, but I think it's also the correct answer to your question, wembley. These guys (Falwell and Robertson) have become insanely wealthy by convincing millions of Americans to give them money, because it's the right thing to do, because God is on their side, because they say so.

An awful lot of Americans will do whatever their favorite face on the TV tells them to. Especially when "religion" is involved, and especially when so many are desperate for answers, so many are afraid, so many are angry, so many are turning to the closest authority figure and begging for hope.

The area I live in is very Bible Belt-ey. Yes, there are people who may adopt that, no question. You see many people who buy anything the Reverend says in church. Hopefully there are those who will think, see that this simply steps over the line of reason, and will turn away.

Oh God.

"Fox presents, The News... as reported by Republicans!"

Scary.

But it least it makes me laugh.

(Kind of)
