The first thing i thought when i read the press release about distributor LPC filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy was how hard it would hit companies like top shelf that are making genuine inroads to the book trade...

I've met Chris Staros on a number of occasions, I've interviewed him. He's a fantastic bloke. Someone who cares deeply about comics and bringing them to the mass market. In forming top shelf with Brett Warnock he's put his money where is mouth is and published some fantastic comics. Try reading "goodbye chunky rice" without shedding a tear... The comics industry will be a poorer place without topshelp. Check out there back catalogue at top shelf comix.com and see what i mean...

Why oh why could this not have happened when I had disposable income shooting out of my ass? Sigh... Maybe I'll go donate some body fluids and buy me a Skibber Bee Bye.

Top Shelf do From Hell, all of Eddie Campbel's stuff and some fantastic books from creators who are less widely pluggest by the comics journal (who are owned by fantagraphics...)

just purchased some of moore's stuff. do you think the company can raise that sort of cash?

Over on the Warren Ellis Forum it's been suggested that they've *already* raised the necessary cash, just from WEF members.

Hell, I was just going to post about that.

I was talking to a friend earlier, and she likes to hear all the current comic news, so I told her about the Top Shelf drive. She sounded really concerned because I gave her this big horror story, then I said that if anything, at the very least, it makes me a little more proud to be a comic reader. On every message board people are mobilizing, pitching in, trying to keep Top Shelf's forward march from sliding back. Makes me a little weepy.

For the record, I'm finally fronting the cash for From Hell and the first Sketchbook Diary.

it's not just top shelf. it's highwater, lightspeed, drawn & quarterly, exhibit a press, metaphrog, mighty gremlin and many others.

top shelf in fact is now well in the clear, thanks to the overwhelming response to their plea. time to get out your credit cards and order from some of them:

highwaterbooks

lightspeedpress

drawnandquarterly

metaphrog

electricgirl

exhibitapress

if you're serious about wanting to help the industry, this is a good place to start.

Fucking god-damn company that went bankrupt is to blame! How can these fuckers run a company than goes bankrupt and fucks up most of the underground industry? Fuckers don't have any sense of responsibility.

Well, this IS what happens when you have a monopoly in control of distribution in any business... and lets remember that distribution of comics in north america is now a virtual monopoly under diamond...

Finder from lightspeed press looks promising, kinda like the invisibles. Anyone here read/recommend it?

My previously non-comic reading housemate read and enjoyed Finder and Mystery Date both from Lightspeed Press, which is a pretty good recommendation by anyone's standards...

Personally I'd like to recommend both of the Louis books published by Metaphrog and available through both direct from them and Top Shelf .

Guess I need to balance the check book tonight and see how much money I can plop down on D&Q. Been meaning to replace my lost Chester Brown/Seth books.

I'm with moriarty, it's nice to see people pull together to help the indies out like this.

I've been friends with Tom aka Highwater for years now, and have just been mailing him. This has definitely hit his funds, and so I'll put out another entreaty to buy some Highwater books. Tom has a huge amount of love for comics and is very dedicated to publishing stuff he feels should be seen - and his decisions are right on 95% of the time.

Cave In, Boys, Catch as Catch Can and Where Hats go are just a few of the books Highwater has done that I really like. Please take a look.

Be careful. No one, regardless of their how big a company or how many people rely on them, goes bankrupt on purpose. Trust me on this. The people involved in the bankruptcy are probably scrambling to recover even more than all the publishers who've been affected. Just because they're not artists or writers doesn't mean they don't care about the industry.

And from the looks of things LPC will be about to pull itself out of Chapter 11 (which is bankruptcy protection that allows a company to keep trading). All involved are working hard to resolve the situation in the most amecable fashion possible.

Could we have a few more recommendations here, please? I'm dying to spend big wads of cash on comics right now, and this way I can do it and feel good at the same time, but I could do with more pointers.

(i'd html-ise the link, but i can never remember the code to get it to open in a new window)

the more i hear about crossgen, the more respect i have for them. what a shame i have no desire to read any of their comics, because if they're willing to spot $5,000 to support the small press, it'd be neat to support them in return.

oh, and as for LPC filing for chapter 11, Marvel also did that back in the day, and they're still in business, so don't get too freaked just yet. 'sides, there's way too much online support to start making funeral plans for the industry just yet.
