Remember the recent flap involving Ivan Massow, when he had a go at the contemporary art scene whilst chairman of the Institute for Contemporary Arts? Well, he's set up a website for his latest project, the Institute for Contemporary Culture:

http://www.culturetm.org

Have a look and see what you think.

Here's the blurb you get when you sign up:

"The Institute of Contemporary Culture (ICC) is a forum that has been established to open a new chapter in all fields of contemporary art and culture. The Young British Artists phenomena was successful in positioning British Art at the forefront of the international scene, but it’s now time for a new chapter to begin. The ICC will provide an umbrella under which contemporary culture can flourish, a forum where different artists can meet, exchange ideas and exhibit both in the virtual space of the on-line community and in ‘real space’."

Immediate impressions: it's not the most user-friendly of sites - very bitty, lots of frames etc And I couldn't find a link to take you to any galleries.

It is definitely not user-friendly in the slightest... they might at least have rollovers to tell you what the sections are. Hmmm. It stirkes me that the project is going to need a great deal of investment from participants (like Barbelith) if it is going to get off the ground.

Yes, and if that is to work then I think it's crucial that the site be easy to use - newcomers need to be able to get to the meat of the matter as quickly as possible. At the moment, there's nothing to focus on, there's no hub. It's early days mind, and I like the ideas behind it. It will be interesting to see what sort of media reaction it gets (if any).

Frankly I think it's absolutely wonderfully entertaining. I'm not sure that's quite what he's supposed to be accomplishing with this one - I mean you can't legitimately start up your own alternative institution every time you're thrown out of the official one... But still - you have to admire his nerve. And anyway he's beautiful and terrible, like a rather dorky force of nature...

Humph. Unfair, if amusing.
