Yeah, me too! I just picked up a comp. of early Bob Marley & The Wailers, back when they were still playing Ska & Bob look more like Smokey Robinson's doppleganger than a Rastafarian. God, it's such beautiful, plaintive, gorgeous stuff. I was playing it on a boombox at work when a woman I've never even seen before came rushing in the room asking me what "What radio station is that?!" When I showed her the CD, the first words out of her mouth were "God, it's so beautiful!". So offered to tape it for her & told her to buy a tape with lots of time on it because I'd be adding lots of cool Reggae/Ska stuff at the end (y'know, Jimmy Cliff, The Clash, Toots & The Maytals, The Specials, The Slits, Peter Tosh, etc.). Man, if you can't spread joy & beauty at times like these, what good are you, y'know?
Hard black soul.
Trying to keep it worldly.
Yeah, especially Otis Redding. In many ways, Otis was almost the MLK, Jr. of Music. He had such a hard childhood & so many strikes against him, and yet, he succeed & never, ever let racism & poverty take a smile off of his face. I just wish I knew how I could write his widow, Zelma Redding, to let her know just how much his music & his example have enriched my life & given me hope at times like these. If anybody knows how I may come in contact with Zelma, I'd be in your debt. |
