I think it would also depend a lot on the specie of the cactus, unless we should assume Peyote is the one you are referring to. As far as peyote goes, all I know is what I've read or been told by my stepfather, which amounts to, well, not much. But here goes.
If you eat it, expect to vomit.
If you smoke it, chances of that are reduced.
If you decide to ingest it, I'd reccomend you follow a bit of tradition. Go outside, dig a small hole as a receptacle for your sick. Those cacti are going to give you some intense visions, it would be respectful to let them return to the ground rather than through the porcelain tube.
I beleive you are to cut out the grey downy center of the peyote button (the word peyote actually referring to that downy stuff, in comparison to a caterpillar's fuzz) as it is poisonaous (cyanide?)
