what do you think? went to see it this evening and really not sure what to make of it at all. Steve Coogan authentically oily as Tony Wilson but a little too Patridge in parts, played shamelessly on a particular version of the events, but I still found it pretty likeable.

Yeah, I'm as surprised as you. and this from the man who brought you the divine Wonderland...

Haven't seen it yet, Plums, but looking forward to it, if only to recall the heady days dancing on the podium at the Hac, full of the exuberance of youth. God, I'm cringing slightly at the memory of that. Having said that, Madchester was completely my thang, so no matter how crap the film I'll probably be watching it through rose-tinted John Lennon specs.

Now if only they'd make a movie about the Stone Roses at Spike Island...

This film is,unsuprisingly, being very heavily advertised here in Manchester. Is it getting the same level of coverage elsewhere?
Looking forward to seeing it but I'm a bit too young to have been a part of the Madchester era. Love the music though and my Dad knows Gary the drummer out of the Mondays. Yes, I know, you can stop being impressed now...

I read somewhere the movie's got Ian Curtis in it .. right record label and all, but it seems a little early and incongruous with all the baggy goings on .. how does he fit in?

The film's more of a focus on the Factory Records empire rather than the Madchester scene per se, and as the original frontman of Joy Division, which were (I think) the second signing to Factory, he'll obviously have quite a big role, at least at the beginning of the story.

So is this thing being released in the US at all?

Disturbingly, I thought that meant that Curtis was actually in it himself, his corpse propped up against something (possibly that of Martin Hannett).

Thanks Randy, *just* the image I needed first thing in the morning...

And Riz, Sax has basically got it, it's pretty much a history of Factory/Hacienda goings on, and as Joy Division/New ORder are pretty central to this, it covers Curtis' suicide etc.

And Sax, think you've nailed the appeal for me, I'll watch pretty much any film about music, and the baggy/manc thing was about the only thing I ever did that 'get into when no-one else has heard of it and strut around school bein' all superior thing' so has a fond place in my heart...

Has reminded me also how damn good 'Substance' is as well.

I'm looking forward to seeing it... mostly BECAUSE of the Joy Division stuff.

oh and Buk, it's been pushed pretty hard in Brighton, but I guess there's assumption of a decent sized target ex yoof audience.

DOn't want to spoil it for people but want to talk about various attempts at playing Curtis, Hannett, Gretton etc.... pretty variable in quality.

Fire away, Plums. It's hardly a story you can spoil, I don't think, anyway.

"You mean Ian Curtis DIES!?"

How does Ralf Little turn out as Hooky, by the way?

Fair point (Johnny Marr did it), it was Ralf Little I was thinking of, actually, he's bloody awful. John Simm on the other hand, is pretty good. Am interested to see what other people make of Coogan's take on Tony Wilson, I think its pretty good, meself.

Chap who plays Rob Gretton, whose name has totally gone, is also really good, very much how I imagine he was, and has some of the funniest moments.

Is there much Joy Division stuff? That's what I'm really looking for... is the guy who plays Ian Curtis any good?

(note: This message is written by someone who has only fairly recently discovered Joy Division.)

Yeah I have to go and see it just to try and spot myself on the big Screen. I'm in the Cabaret Voltaire, early 80's Hacienda and in the audience during Iggy Pop.

The guy they had playing Iggy Pop didn't know who Iggy was - he'd only been cast the day before the shot it! It was disgraceful. Still the free beer was nice.

Iggy Pop's in it too? I think I may have to see it..
