Crime reduction

What measures/tactics would you implement to reduce crime?
Be as specific or general as you like on what type of crime and at what level you would implement changes e.g. community, police, penal system, political legislation, education.

Some examples I can think of are things like; legalising or decriminalising drugs, tightening drug laws, I.D. cards, CCTV surveillance, police presence on the street, penal reform, more emphasis on community service, zero tolerance.

Do you live in an area where there have been radical changes implemented designed to reduce crime? Have they worked?

Also, what criticisms do you have of planned or existing measures of crime reduction?

The last time I saw Mark Thomas he was on about CCTV and that there is no evidence that it has reduced crime, even though so much investment (including state investment) is made into it...there was an article in todays guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Article/0,4273,4383488,00.html) about drug law attitudes...

...sorry got broken off then, the article talks about the criminalisation of drugs being the problem not the drugs themselves, personally i would decriminalise all drugs-people should be able to make there own minds up ALSO doesn't making natural drugs like grass ilegal seem a little 'unnatural/overly paranoid' to quote Hicks.

Legalize all drugs...

All drug crimes would disappear. Now they would be legal activities.

Hundreds of Thousands would be transubstantiated from criminals to innocent citizens in an instant. Take the money that goes into the war on drugs and move it into homocide/violent crime investigation and also into medical treatment of addicts.

Close down the unnecesary prisons.

Its not that hard.
