Hypertext links etc.

just wondering what the ubb code is for creating hypertext links and image links and or if Tom would prefer such things not be used in this initial stage of the board's refurbishment...

There are no codes for these things any more - it's just good old fashioned basic HTML - that's using <a href="linkurl.html">name of link</a>

Nice and simple. People can also do bold, italics and insert images.

Umm... for those of us who've barely learned how to send text messages and are utterly ignorant of "good old fashioned basic HTML", is there any chance of a more technologically astute 'Lither linking to somewhere that explains bold, italics, links, images, etc. in terms we really would find "nice and simple"?

since this is a stricly client side function, you could recreate the an html friendly version of the UBB buttons without much trouble

What is the add-in to the hypelink tag that allows you to target a new browser window to open for the link?

Tom Coates

inside the first tag put target=_blank as well - then you'll have no trouble!

just tried the a href tag in the anti-corp ps2 thread in the headshop and it won't work. Also tried to rework it but no use...help. I'm positive I wrote the tag correctly at first..then I just took it out so members could copy and paste it. Still no good...

Okay I'm a thicko, but I still can't make the hypertext link thing work (and I'm too self-conscious to repeat trial & error attempts here). In Tom's example, should " marks be added to the URL? Should .html be added to the end of the URL, even if it ends in .htm?

Why isn't it working for me?

An example:

a link to the bbc news page should look llike this A HREF= http://www.bbc.co.uk the bbc page Put an opening tag < in front of the A and a closing tag at the end of the address you will have yourself a hypertext link

and in answer to 'nesh's question some links ens .html some in .htm and a variety of others... your best bet is usually to cut and paste the link from the address window of your browser...

sleaze, you forgot the inverted commas.

'Nesh, do it exactly as Tom's example, including the " marks.

Another way of putting it: if you wanted to link to this page, your HTML link would look like this

[a href="http://www.barbelith.com/underground/reply.php?id=5619"]Click here for link[/a]

except with <> brackets rather than [] ones.

Whoops. Pasted the URL from the 'reply to' page, but other than that it works.

There appears to be an issue with quote marks in posts that have been moderated, but I'll try and get that sorted out ASAP...

okay, let's get this straight - is it just <b>, <i>, <a> and <img> that we can use?

<blockquote>...? oh go on...

I am intrigued on these things about inserting pictures like the bee photograph Stone Mirror posted here.

Do you need to have your own site with the pictures there to do it or you can link to other's???

You can post pictures from other people's sites, but bear in mind that this will pinch bandwidth from the person concerned. We've all done it, but a little consideration is a good thing.

There are free image hosting services availiable; I use villagephotos.com. You'll need to have the image saved on your hard drive so you can upload it onto the server-- on a PC you do this by right-clicking on the picture and selecting "save picture as..." from the menu.

Once your picture is uploaded you use the image tag to post it, thus:

<img src="http://www.Whatever the URL of the image is">

we so need an HTML FAQ, and a list of allowed tags

Toooommmm...

I'm prepared to write the FAQ if need be.

Thanks Mord@nt, I had read about villagephotos on other thread here.

It looks like Barbelith needs not just one FAQ but three or four at least. Chaps at the Magick forum are planning one also. And maybe the HTML related FAQ should just link to those web tutorials.
