So it looks like I'm going to be in New York at the beginning of next month... Haven't booked my flight yet (waiting for that redundancy cheque, which annoyingly has been delayed already), but ideally I'll be there from 2nd-10th April. Flux = Genuinely Rad has already helped me out loads by (possibly, probably) sorting out somewhere for me to stay - cheers mate (and if said friends of Flux are reading this, you have my eternal gratitude, and rest assured I'm actually much more civilised and reasonable than I give the impression here).

So, how am I gonna fill my days and nights in what other tourists might call the Big Apple? Well, one reason for this thread is to solicit suggestions of places to go, things to see etc (though I've already got a couple of good guides, I reckon). But of course another is to try to arrange to meet up with any fine Barbefolk who are in New York. I'd especially like to meet the mighty Ierne, so mighty Ierne, if you read this and are up for a meeting, holler back... But of course anyone else too, it's just I can never keep track of who lives where - how many of the people in that photo of the last NYC meet were actually from New York? todd? anyone else?

HOLLER!

I'd love to hang with you next month! Is Flux setting you up in Brooklyn?

Yeah, it looks like Flyboy will be staying in DUMBO, at the loft where I used to live.

To answer Flyboy: I think only half of the people at the NYC meet were from the NY area - Spider, Ierne, the twins, MJ-12, Deb...

Todd, HunterWolf, Flux & myself live in Brooklyn (wait – Flux moved, didn't he? You still in the hood, Flux?), MJ-12 & Floats with Spider live in New Jersey, and Deb is moving from Brooklyn to Jersey...the Neo Yeti Circus Twins (Lionheart/Enamon) live in Staten Island... Can't recall if there's anyone in Manhattan, Queens or the Boogie Down (Isn't lolita nation also a NYC Barbelither?)

I seem to recall the Twins wanting to throw a party at their place...

I'm currently an hour north of Manhattan, up in Westchester... it's a temporary situation. I intend to move back to Brooklyn sometime in the fall.

I'll verify that Lolita is in Manhattan...

How could I forget the twins and MJ-12 (and everyone else...)?

Anyway, as Flux says, more details have been confirmed, and I'm getting more and more excited about this... Just annoyed that I may have to wait until this weekend to book the tickets, and so the dates are subject to change slightly, but it should definitely cover the period from, say, the 4th-8th (that's the Thursday to the Monday), so maybe we should try to arrange something then?

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?

Go to the Unity Diner - it's Park Slope's finest. You'll love its all-night Flyboy-oriented specials.

Oh, trust me, my friend, your accent alone is like a platinum card that will open the doors, boy.

Rock ON with your bad self!

Count me in. I'm apparently more tolerable after I've had a few.

I'm moving April 1st, (where remains to be determined). But may be able to provide lodging, transportation or entertainment assistance.

Flyboy, any chance of you dragging any other UK'ers with you?

Quite a bit more tolerable. Acctually, I advise staying away from him untill he's had a few. But, after to much, then he's annoying again.

Flyboy --- some music events of interest during yr stay:

April 1, Gold Chains & Kid606 @ Knitting Factory

April 2, Cat Power @ The Warsaw

April 4, Clinic @ Bowery Ballroom (sold out I think - this is the show Todd and I are attending.) April 2 and 3rd shows still on sale.

April 5, The Danielson Famile @ The Knitting Factory (late show --- the early show is Black Dice/Erase Errata) I'm certainly seeing the DF show.

April 9, Guided By Voices @ Warsaw (April 10 as well, but I'm certainly seeing the 9 show, I already have a ticket)

I'll put up more later...

You forgot White Stripes at the Bowery Ballroom for on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. I'm going on the 6th, but I think sadly all 4 dates are sold out, at least on the web. Check ticketweb as they might release more tickets.

Too bad Flyboy misses his beloved Le Tigre playing by less than a week...

I'm pretty sure that the White Stipes shows are completely sold out. A friend of mine tried everything, and is empty handed still.

I didn't even want to mention Le Tigre cos I didn't want to break the poor boy's heart...

Ha! Well, I'm now thinking about coming on the 31st, so I might catch Le Tigre after all...

Another cheap fun way to spend an evening:

The UCB Theatre.

Regrettable Juvenilia

Right - well the Le Tigre gig is on the 30th, apparently, and it looks like it's sold out - so, seeing as I'm going to see them in London in May, I think I'll try and come on the 31st...

Gold Chains is a must-see though. Cat Power less so cos she's a bit... erratic live.

Although shit, I've just spoken to STA Travel and the prices available seem to have skyrocketed since two days ago... er... I'm still coming though.

15:31 / 15.03.02
Ah, but you are getting room & board for free...

more events:

The First Decade (survey of experimental video works of the 70s) at Museum of Modern Art

Gerhard Richter retrospective at Museum of Modern Art

German Expressionist exhibit at Museum of Modern Art

just plain visting PS1

Yo La Tengo playing the live score to the films of Jean Painleve @ Lincoln Center

various films playing only in special NYC theatres (BAM, Anthology Film Archives, Angelika, Cinema Classics, Film Forum, etc)

Mike Kelley retrospective @ Skarsdekt gallery

....

Ah! Ah! Ah! The Walkmen @ The Knitting Factory 4/6!

I used to be hardly working, now I'm working hard...

Uh, I'd totally be interested in any/all of the above museum trips, I work until 5:30 during the week but my second job has flexible evening/weekend hours...

Also, I love the Film Forum. I especially love the good eats (and drinks) over at the Caribbean joint across the street or Brother's BBQ across the other street and down...

Oh, I hadn't even thought of food - Flyboy, what kind of food do you like? I'm sure we can work up a nice list of places to go for eats...

There's a delightful Senegalese restaraunt a couple of blocks away from BAM...although I'm not keen on the layout of BAM Rose Cinema, I'd be up for a BAM outing as well.

Flights booked! I'm getting in on the evening of the 30th March and leaving on the evening of the 10th April.

bitchie, how does either Friday the 5th or Saturday the 6th sound to you? I guess Saturday would be easier for you to drive up on - don't have any plans for that day yet as far as I know...

What you really need to do is sleep on your plane ride to NYC, then be met by a bevvy of people who will ply you with drinks until you pass out. In the morning you will find your jet-lag completely gone.

Trust me, it's the only way to fly europe to the states...

hey Flyboy: is your PM working? I've tried twice and keep getting error messages.

Is anyone meeting you at the airport? If not, do you have directions on how to get to Brooklyn from the Airport (JFK, LaGuardia or Newark)?

Taxis are expensive.
