ok; i think it's becoming increasingly obvious that the mainstream media is in full-on propagandist mode - the most obvious symptoms being the almost obsessive use of the disaster footage counterpointed with the Palestinians celebrating.

Osama bin Laden has pretty much been tried, sentenced and condemned to death on the basis that the authorities are blaming him. the media is refusing to address the question of WHY this happened, except to brand bin Laden as evil.

Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine are right now at very real risk from the western military. Israel have already used the events of 9/11 as a catch-all justification for further military actions in Palestine.

what i want to suggest is - how about using this thread to store any really abhorrent examples of propaganda anyone comes across in the media? especially anything from a mainstream media source that pushes conclusions or advocates action on the basis of those conclusions - seemingly without any real evidence.

also: distortions of the truth, outright make-believe, and loaded/biased coverage.

anyone?

This LA Times story full of such helpful labels as 'evil geniuses' for the terrorists.

Great minds, Autopilot! Check out my 'US media coverage' thread for my own similar concerns.

as has been pointed out, the use of the word 'war' was a major turning-point in all this. Bush's definition of the attack as an act of war was strengthened by senator mccain's (?) kneejerk comparison to Pearl Harbour - and since then, Colin Powell has claimed it was the first blow of a 'war against civilization'.

as with the caricature of bin Laden being floated around, all this ill-defined rhetoric serves only to cow debate and dissent. and to signal in advance the US feels no need to take international law into account when making its response. by allowing article5 (or whatever) to be invoked, the rest of Nato has lent its support to such a chain of events.
