Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here, but if America goes to war alot of other countries probably will too. This may or may not mean a world war, but even so with such a multicultural world how does one distinguish from so-called enemies?. And with this age of technology people around the world are connected, if there were a war people may be killing their internet-buddies.
Suddenly there would be descrimination due to racial background (I know it already happens but I have never seen this) and hatred towards anyone different... maybe...
But beyond this my greatest fear is that john howard will bring back conscription for males and females. I dont want to go to war and neither does anyone else i know, not meaning to be rude but, not for another countries cause... I appreciate you listening, I dont need any advice, just venting my fears/frustration/etc.

Nato's 'contingency plans', as reported in The Guardian, seem to imply cooperation with the USSR, China and various Muslim countries - but also imply possible invasion of the likes of Iraq as well as Afghanistan. I really hope it's mainly bluster...

So do we all... talk of "not ruling out the nuclear option" has me in cold sweats... as too does Blair's insistence that we will "back America WHATEVER they decide to do" (my emphasis) and the fact that at some point last night while I was at work, (& therefore catching a couple of minutes of News 24 every hour or so) tho' there'd been no updates in the story since the arrests yesterday, bin Laden stopped being the man "believed/probably responsible" and became "the man responsible", without any definite moment of transition or stated reason for such... much as I hate the Taleban, I fear the consequences of an all-out attempt to "crush" Afghanistan, however it is carried out.

I couldn't find it right away, but I think this is the article to which Ganesh was alluding (and sorry to nit-pick, but I believe the USSR is now called Russia and various former Soviet states. Come to think of it, what the heck ARE they called?).

Jean Chretien is apparently also backing the US "whatever they do." Which has made me a little bit nervous. Does anyone out there think NATO will actually be called upon to be good on its word? And what do you think would be the main form of support - money, space, military?

NATO will give america whatever it wants; people, bombs, space, other people's space, etc. The line that scares me is that "America will notice no distinction between the terrorists and the nations that harbor them"... and some of them are using Canada??? my old neighborhood was predominantly middle eastern, and my dad teaches there... I dunno.

Jack Straw seems to be doing his bit to backtrack at least slightly, claiming it's not a 'blank cheque'.

To my mind the states are in the process of finding out which countries are their friends and those who aren't friends will be the enemy.
As heart-warming as it is to see the world leaders showing support and sympathy to america a part of me views this as kids in a class protecting themselves because the biggest kid (with the worst temper) just got smacked and he's looking to get his own back.
To my mind the States will draw up a list of all the countries that aren't "friends" with them then pay them a visit with several million dollars worth of high-tech weaponary. And if you're not a friend of the states then watch your back.

i'm curious to see if this will bring about a return to cold-war style hospitality, with britain housing american arms again.

just when they'd finally reclaimed greenham as common land, as well...
