Edinburgh's Evening News reports that youths in Craigshill, Livingston (the arse-end of Central Scotland) have attacked a local mosque with stones and rocks, shouting "Death from America". Little damage done, but those inside terrified of lynching.

Twats.

It's mostly been lost in the overall coverage of this thing, but there were a few incidents like that in the States, as well. I wish I could remember the particulars, but I'm somewhat stunned and scatterbrained because of all this.
There are, unfortunately, a lot of dumb fuckers who immediately want to go and kick some "towel-head" ass. Idiots.

As a 30 year old Yank, I've never seen "war hysteria" firsthand. There was some stupid bullshit about gas prices and gas lines and such already. People near where I live were all but fighting each other last night, all insisting the price of gas would triple by today. It didn't. Hysteria, plain and simple.

I can only think of the Japanese "internment camps" of WWII and that awful Denzel Washington/Bruce Willis flick of a few years ago with the Arab-American camps, and hope that the land I live in is better than that.

I hope. I guess it's too early to tell, yet.

I heard some story from a colleague with relatives whose flight was cancelled that the cost of their NY hotel room tripled. Hard to believe that some individuals were already using the massacre to make money...

Same deal with the gas prices. Although it's illegal and heavy fines are coming to them, some jacked the price up to twice what it was to capitalize on the hysteria.

Fucking sad.

today in economics class at my state-funded university, we learned that the one dude in Oklahoma jacked his prices up to $5 a gallon to decrease demand. he probably didn't profit at all. smart move, in my opinion.

On the subject of local reactions, there's been a few muted rumblings and mutterings around dark-skinned health professionals within the psychiatric hospital where I worked yesterday - and from staff as much as patients. One stunningly tactless exchange took place between two doctors, one Scottish, one Kashmiri, along the lines of "your lot" being responsible - all under the guise of good-natured banter.

It's happening in Australia, too...

I finally heard from my boss yesterday – he was stuck in New Jersey and refused entry until yesterday afternoon. He is Pakistani, and I was really fearing the worst. (NY & NJ Highway Patrol are not know for their open-mindedness and gentle, caring behavior.)

Even though it was a short message asking me to please come to work today and that he would try to come to Manhattan, I was relieved.
