My daughter is rapidly closing in on two years old. She loves music, any kind of music. So much tha she'll come running from her room to dance in front of the TV when the Buffy theme comes on. Anyway, I've noticed that most of my albums are by men and I'd like her to hear a few more feminine voices on the radio both at home and in the car so I'm going to be making her some CDs of her own. She likes anything fast (but not hardcore fast) and bouncy (she loves reggae). So, basically I'm looking for recommendations, be they Spice Girls or whatever. Nothing raunchy, please.

Bis "The New Transistor Heroes"

Boppy disco/kiddie punk/funky/occasionally ska-ish full of positive kid-friendly non-hateful feminist/anti-corporate sloganeering. Plus songs about DIY, skateboards, hating supermodels, and loving candy.

The band is co-ed, but Manda Rin sings lead on a huge chunk of the songs, and back-up on most of the others.

And they are cute!

Give it a shot.

There's always the legendary Shonen Knife. Let's Knife is still a great pop album.

the Muffs, the Donnas, the Eyeliners, the Shitbirds, Banana Erectors and Supersnazz all play fun, upbeat, catchy pop/punk/rock'n'roll kinda stuff that puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step. there may be a touch of raunch in some of them (it is rock'n'roll after all), but nothing a youngster would pick up on (you may not want your two-year old daughter toddling around saying "shitbird" or "banana erector", but those are the two cutest, most kid-friendly bands on the list.)

Aqua are the greatest commercial pop group of the last decade.

the Ronettes, the Crystals and the Shangri-Las are all great, and all had quite a few upbeat, good-time moments.

Dressy Bessy do lovely clean pop noise. In fact, you could do worse than get "The Powerpuff Girls - Heroes and Villains", which has lots of top child-friendly pop, with variously-gendered singers.

When I was a young'n I was quite fond of Joni Mitchell and Maria Muldaur, but then I was young'n growing up in the 70s, so...
