The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern called on all employers and businesses to cease trading for the day. An official public holiday has been declared for the purpose of allowing people observe a national tribute to the dead and injured of the terrorist attacks in the US yesterday.
Ahern asked all employers and employees to honour the spirit of this public holiday to "show solidarity with people of all nationalities who have lost their lives". He encouraged people to attend religious services on the day.
The Tánaiste Mary Harney said that legally pubs and other leisure businesses were entitled to open their businesses but asked them not to trade on Friday.
At a meeting today, the cabinet instructed that all national flags be flown at half-mast. Extra staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs are being dispatched to the consulate in New York to assist in the work of identifying Irish victims
