Any more word on that Van Halen covers album?

The single greatest cover in the world is Elbow's version of Destiny's Child's "Independent Women". It's fucking genius - imagine sleaze-cheese keys (or accordion) with the most laid-back vocals ever. Polkatastic!

Sonic Youth did "Within You, Without You."

Michelle Shocked did "Lovely Rita," Billy Bragg and.. some woman.. did "She's Leaving Home," and the Fall did "A Day in the Life."

I really liked that album.

"Acid Eaters" - I really wanted them to do the "two girls for every boy" part of "Surf City". But the Byrds song rocked.

On the changing-my-pants front, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is also an old favorite of mine - before they let women in the group to make them, like, multiplatinum superstars, they were a dirty little blues outfit. Very nice. Can't wait to hear the Monks do it.
Do me a favor - when this album is out, remind me. I want, I want.

I've just realised that, strictly speaking, The Detroit Cobra's album 'Life, Love & Leaving' is a covers album, in that all the songs are revivals of old soul/blues/r'n'r tunes...

...which gives me a chance to say, GET IT, IT'S FRRRKKING BRILLIANT!!

The Hindu love gods (REM and some other bloke) - waste of space and time that I paid money for. The version of Raspberry Beret made me pine for the Prince version and I never ever thought i'd say that.

The fall's cover of a day in the life is superb, almost as good as David Essex doing ghostbusters or maybe Paul Young's 'Love will tear us apart', I shit you not.

But Grant, can't believe you didn't mention Frank Sidebottom doing 'For the benefit of mr Kite', genius...

I fergot the Mister Kite dude's name. He/they also did the runoff track for side two, only on side one. With someone yelling at them for getting the wrong side.

Someone doesn't like the Hindu Love Gods?
Well, the singer is Warren Zevon, the guy who did "Werewolves of London" and "Lawyers, Guns & Money" and "Things to do in Denver When You're Dead." (the movie was named for the song)

I didn't much care for most of the blues stuff, but really liked "Raspberry Beret" and (the Bside on the single) "Narrator," the REM surfy song about wanting to be the narrator on the Jacques Cousteau show.
Which is goofy as hell when you've got Zevon's baritone singing it.

I did mention Yo La Tengo's "Fakebook" in this thread, didn't I?
One of the best albums ever, and it's all covers.

Also, just got Mark Kozelek's (Red House Painters) "What's Next to the Moon?", a collection of 10 moody, melancholy, acoustic AC-DC covers. It's great.
