Another "long courageous battle" with cancer, t'would appear. I wonder if people have "short intense skirmishes" with heart attacks or strokes, or if they just give in straightaway?

Does anyone ever win the battle against cancer? And if they do does that mean that they lose a battle to something else?

Me, I'm gonna live forever.

Nothing farther from the truth, my dear. All it takes now it's two more bullets, you see?

I'm really sorry. That was horrible.

it's so sad.
when i was little, my best friend tom was great chums with danhi harrison. when he went to play at his house, his mum would get nervous picking him up because she was such a fan of the beatles.
she would drill him for information about what living chez george harrison was like after he'd stayed there.
as legend has it, she said:
- tom, what did you have for your dinner at danhi's house?
- we had macaroni cheese. they're vegetarians.
- thats nice. did george have his dinner with you?
- yes. and some other bloke was there too.
- what was his name?
- bob dylan.
true story.

i come from working-class liverpool, so the whole Beatles myth has always had a resonance for me. it's good that George, who from all accounts was a shy and humble kinda guy, got to stand in the limelight alongside the louder bandmembers and, in the process, add some depth and shade to scouse caricatures.

there's a discography here, an article on what was probably his most important artistic contribution - in embracing eastern influences - here and...

There'll come a time when all of us must leave here
Then nothing sister Mary can do
Will keep me here with you
As nothing in this life that I've been trying
Could equal or surpass the art of dying
Do you believe me?

There'll come a time when all your hopes are fading
When things that seemed so very plain
Become an awful pain
Searching for the truth among the lying
And answered when you've learned the art of dying

But you're still with me
But if you want it
Then you must find it
But when you have it
There'll be no need for it

There'll come a time when most of us return here
Brought back by our desire to be
A perfect entity
Living through a million years of crying
Until you've realized the Art of Dying
Do you believe me?

actually - this is better:

Sunrise doesn't last all morning
A cloudburst doesn't last all day
Seems my love is up and has left you with no warning
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away

Sunset doesn't last all evening
A mind can blow those clouds away
After all this, my love is up and must be leaving
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
None of life's strings can last
So, I must be on my way
And face another day

Now the darkness only stays the night-time
In the morning it will fade away
Daylight is good at arriving at the right time
It's not always going to be this grey

All things must pass
All things must pass away
All things must pass
All things must pass away

My mom's pretty upset about it – she's a Beatle fan from way back in '64. When they came here she was at the airport.

He wasn't that much older than my mom – only 58.

He was extremely influential in bringing South Asian music and culture to a European/American audience, which opened up our musical & social landscapes tremendously. Whatever one personally thinks of his music, for that alone he deserves props.

And...he wrote Taxman, which fucking rocks.

I was thinking more along the lines of "All Things Must Pass," myself...

So long, old fella. Head towards the light, and you'll be fine.

>>sigh<<

I'm sad. Here we are just over a week from the anniversary of John's death (I still remember where I was when I heard the news, even though I was only 6!).

George was my favorite beatle until I was 5, at which time I switched allegiance to John (who remains the fave).

I kinda knew what with the throat cancer and the brain cancer he was probably going to eat it soon, but still.

George wrote some really incredible songs; "Something" is one of the most beautiful rock songs ever, and certainly deserves its title as one of the most-recorded songs of all time (far, far superior to 'Yesterday'). Certainly a song that makes "Abbey Road" the piece of perfection that it is.

He will be missed, but he is certainly lucky to leave such a beautiful legacy behind.

He also helped out Monty Python with The Holy Grail and Life of Brian, which led to Handmade Films, the production company that brought us Withnail & I, among many other cool flicks.

I never post in music forum... I like music but don't pay it much mind... anyway... driving to work this morning and listening to NPR reel off all the George Harrison songs brought home to me that every one of the Beatles songs that I considered my very favorites was written by George Harrison.

Peace. Respect.

There is one good thing about this.

The local pop station that play in my office is running a bunch of beatles stuff.

The light that shines twice as bright, shines half as long.

Guess that explains why the two good ones are dead.

Oh man...even though I saw it coming, that's still a bit of a surprise. That's very sad, 58 is still pretty young.

I think Ringo and Paul will be around for quite a while, though. I think Paul will live to be a very very very old man.

I kind of hard to dislike Harrison, even though his solo records were fakkiin' terrible.

He helped the production of some of the funniest films ever made, and he seemed a decent sort of fellow, even if his music has been utterly ghastly for about 30 years.

Actually, the funniest thing is that the comedy page of the latest Leicester student paper, which came out last week, has a feature entitled 'George Harrison - Immortal' in which the writer jokingly suggests that George is a cyborg and will outlive the cockroaches.. bad timing or what.

Yeah, and "Time Bandits" wouldn't have been made without his involvement, either.

This is actually pretty strange to hear that he's dead because last night's Simpson's episode happened to be the one that he appeared on (the one where Homer forms a barbershop quartet & wins a Grammy). My juju just got exponentially freakier....

I already posted my respects on the Conversation... but hey, a Beatle can get respected twice, surely?... Already explained why I liked George... now my two faves are both gone... Ringo shifts into pole position.
Have a good one, George.

Hey! Hey! You may be right (mostly), but I'm willing to bet Ween wish they'd written "Crackerbox Palace". That's the most fucked-up release known to man, especially if you've seen the filmclip.

It features dancing gnomes.

Some nice bios and musical tributes to George this weekend, but the one thing that DOES annoy me is the babyboomers using this as a measuring mark as "a sign of their mortality." Blafuckingbla - I don't want to HEAR about 1964 and where you were when the Ed Sullivan Show was on - accept the fact that you're ALL getting old...

being flip here, but:

wouldn't it be ironic if the other two don't make it to be 64 as well?
