So, given that the evidence linking the school (of the Americas) to continuing atrocities in Latin America is rather stronger than the evidence linking the al-Qaida training camps to the attack on New York, what should we do about the "evil-doers" in Fort Benning, Georgia?

Well, we could urge our governments to apply full diplomatic pressure, and to seek the extradition of the school's commanders for trial on charges of complicity in crimes against humanity. Alternatively, we could demand that our governments attack the United States, bombing its military installations, cities and airports in the hope of overthrowing its unelected government and replacing it with a new administration overseen by the UN. In case this proposal proves unpopular with the American people, we could win their hearts and minds by dropping naan bread and dried curry in plastic bags stamped with the Afghan flag.

Piece on the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation.

Apart from "George Mobiot is a wanker", which we already know, what do people think?

One of the reasons that the majority of "terrorist" attacks previous to 9/11 originated in South/Central America and not the Middle East.

Whilst we're at it do the same to the British Governement for the arming of Loyalist Terrorists in Northern Ireland, invading Southern Ireland on several occasions, support money and training for the Khymer Rouge, and the list goes on.

But what's your point Haus? (Sorry feeling a bit helpless in the face of international events this morning.)

US hypocrisy has been hilighted by the sounds of a culture in denial (They did it because they were jealous seems to be cry of the liberals in mainstreet USA, while the rest of the lumpenmass seemed happiest with the idea of evil).

What I feel is the only thing you can do as an individual is not forget, and to keep reminding people of the awkward truths.

In this case there are two

The USA is a great sponsor of terrorism, and exploiter of third world economies, particularly in Greater America.

Killing people does not make their friends and relatives like or respect you.

I respect and empathize with your utter frustration. It's a fucked up world.

haus: if you're using that quotelet to infer Monbiot really believes in the plan he outlines (and is therefore as much of a wanker as those he has so loudly opposed), you're being purposefully misleading. even if that isn't yr intent, i think it's worth clarifiying its context, and pointing out that he follows the scenario with:

You object that this prescription is ridiculous, and I agree.

moreover, the example he uses is taken wholesale from an essay by Arundhati Roy - who likewise used it as a rhetorical device only.

so, what is it you're asking for a response to? the article? or George Monbiot himself?

seems to me that by taking a potshot at Monbiot and assuming everyone agrees with you, you've already given this thread a particular slant...

No, Autopilot. I think George Mobiot is a wanker simple. It's a default response, and has nothing to do with the article. I quoted the section above because it's funny.
