I need a better musical director for my life

I sing quite a lot when I'm out and about, and have recently been noticing that my subconscious is depressingly literal, to the point that if my life was a film the soundtrack would be heartily mocked for its rubbishness.

Recent examples:
Leaving work on Friday - Madonna's "Holiday"
Leaving work the following Thursday having unexpectedly been given Friday off: "I'm free! To do what I want! Any old time!"
Finding out it was raining although it was warm: "I - I, love to feel the rain in the summertime"
Finding out it was raining and miserable: "Why does it always rain on me?"
Finding out it was raining but being quite pleased about it: "I'm singing in the rain"
Remembering it was Sunday: "Every Day Is Like Sunday"
Finding out my train left from Platform 7: "Platform SEven, my head is spinning" (to the tune of "Dizzy")

Is it possible to sack your subconscious?

No, but I reckon if you listened to less local radio you might find that those tunes didn't pop into your head quite so easily. I remember back in the days when I used to have the kind of shitty jobs where there was a radio in the corner playing local stations all day all my most loathed records of the time used to pop into my head unwanted because of the sheer repetition factor.

The prime example of this being Cast's 'Guiding Star', one of the most repellent whiny northern pub-rock records ever. I worked out at the time that he sang 'get up' about 40 times in the song, and since I would hear it at least 5 times in the course of a working day (grrr... playlisting) I had to hear those words 200 times daily, so it was no surprise that I kept subconsciously singing it...

Agreed you can't sack it, but you can repremand it severly by playing Rembrandt Pussy Horse (Butthole Surfers), every morning before you go out. You may find it leaves of it's own accord.

Yes! Those disgusting jobs where Radio One blares away in the background, pacifying the workforce. Where nobody's really interested in music anyway, and anything that deviates from the playlist gets shouted down with cries of, "What on earth is that racket? You call that music?"

And then everyone in the packing room shuts down, goes into automatic, and the mailing goes out on time fueled by Sisco's 'Thong Song'.

Dark.

The irony is that I listen to nothing except 80's electropop (not Madonna), Talking Heads, Leonard Cohen, and Laurie Anderson. (My subconscious clearly listens to a radio station of its own, though.)

Hmmm. Maybe I should get hold of some more *singable* music that isn't shit, and listen to that (Uncle Len may be a genius, but catchy he isn't). And then finally, 6 months after seeing "The King and I", I might be able to stop having "Getting to know you" as my default setting.

All together now:

Getting to know you
Getting to know all about you
Getting to like you
Getting to hope you like me...

Deva, I'll do you a tape of songs off the Sesame Street videos my, er, son has. They are the catchiest damn tunes in the universe. Seriously, it's the best pop I've heard in a long time. I've been singing them in my brane almost non-stop for the past few months.

"You take an M, that's Mmmmmmm
And an 'o' 'p' OP!
Put 'em all together and they spell MOP!
That's MOP - Em oh peeeeee, MOP!"
[repeat etc]

Yes. Yes, exactly as in that.
