I have finally got the scanner/printer/fax machine/whatever to work and it scans things as Tiff files.

And I have no clue how to make these tiff files into anything remotely usable.

Anyone know what I can do to make them gif of jpeg files?

You need Photoshop. Photoshop is great for switching file formats around.

Or any other image editor really.

You can still use the tiffs, to drop them into a word document goto > insert > picture > from file. Word can recognise tiff images (or at least it should be able to)

Your scanner/printer/fax machine/whatever may have come with some graphics manipulation software which should allow you to convert the tiff files.

However, what you really want to do is get a copy of Adobe Photoshop - the de facto industry standard for graphics manipulation. But beware, it's not cheap: prices start from $609 on Adobe's site...

Speaking as a poor bastard with a Mac, there are plenty of photo manipulation programs that can convert files w/out shelling $600 for. If I need to do what you're doing, I use a Photoshop-esque freeware program called Digital Darkroom or the bundled version of Kai's Photo Soap. If all you need is conversion, those'll do just fine, I'd bet.

And for the record, GIF's are primarily for graphics while JPEG is primarily for photos.

Also, can't you do this with your net browser? For example, I'm runnin' Internet Explorer 5. Under "file", choose "Open File". Once the image loads onscreen, choose "Save As" & change it to whatever file type you want. It's that easy, innit? Or am I wrong?

Margin Walker: I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Preeeeetty sure.

Use Graphic Converter instead. Download it here. It's free, and doesn't expire. You have to wait ten seconds while it starts up, but other than that, it's non-knobbled.

The process for turning 'em into JPEGs is simple:
  1. Find the folder with your TIFFs in 'em - call it "Tiff" or whatever.
  2. Create a second, empty folder. This is where your converted pics will go. Call it "Converts" or something like.
  3. Start Graphic Converter.
  4. In the File menu, choose Convert
  5. On the right-side, select your new ("Converts") folder. On the left side, find your originals ("Tiff") folder.
  6. Using shift-click, select all your originals.
  7. Using the Dest. Format dropdown on the right (above an "options" button), select JPEG/JFIF (*.JPG, *.JPEG) from the list.
  8. Press Convert. Your originals will convert, and be saved as .jpg files in your "Converts" folder. Note that you can convert individually (by highlighting one file and press "convert") too.
That's it. You've now got jpegs in the converted folder, and your tiff originals in your Tiff folder.

Does that make sense? PM me if not.
