Got listening to their two previous albums- fucking fantastic. Any other suggestions for George Clinton- esque hip hop listening?

The album that reminds me most of Outkast that I've heard recently is Party Music by The Coup... Sadly only the first half of that record is really any good, but it is *very* good - adding very fired-up and intelligent political comment and revolutionary fervour into the mix.

If you have Audiogalaxy or equivalent then I'd recommend checking out the following tracks: 'Everythang', 'Wear Clean Drawers', '5 Million Ways To Kill A CEO', 'Get Up', 'Ghetto Manifesto', and 'Ride The Fence'.

Sauron, I strongly encourage you to seek out Outkast's first two records, ATLiens and Southernplayalisticadillacmusik. They are both very, very strong and worthwhile records - I would go so far to say that I think Southern... is their finest record (technically, Stankonia is more accomplished, but has a bit of filler on it, it's a little over long ... ATLiens comes a bit short of it, and I think that Aquemini is pretty lackluster by their standards).

Southern... and ATLiens are both darker and more dub sounding than the later two, they don't have that P-Funk thing going on as much as this lovely late-night funk lite-jazz vs. dub sound. Go for it.

Either which way, you *need* to hear "Elevators (Me & You)", "Crumblin' Erb" and "Git Up Git Out". They are all on the recent Outkast greatest hits record along with three excellent new songs that are certainly on the same wavelength as the best tunes from Stankonia, and beyond that, even.

Thanks Flux- how many albums do they have? I thought there was only three? I've listened to the two previous to Stankonia- are these ones other ones?

And I've got the greatest hits- every one a fucking stonker. Any more artists to recommend Flux?

What the fuck does "stonker" mean? Is that positive? It doesn't sound positive.

Outkast discography:

Southernplayalisticadillacmusic
ATLiens
Aquemini
Stankonia
s/t greatest hits

Hm. There's just so much to recommend, that I'm drawing a blank. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go back through the old hip hop threads and music recommendation threads that we have here...

Trying to recommend hip hop that sounds like Outkast is hard, because they are very unique. I can recommend other good funky hip hop, I can push other funk stuff. I'll get back to you later on this.

Cool, thanks, I'm fairly up on Hip Hop generally- it's just OutKast sounds so funky without dipping into G-Funk obviousness, was a bit reticent when I heard Ms Jackson, but the older stuff and album tracks are far cooler.

And Stonker/ Stonking are +ive this side of the pond ...

Re: Ms Jackson

This weekend, I found a great version of "Ms Jackson", the vocals spliced over the music to Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" - it improved "Ms Jackson" significantly. Search it out, look for Outkast feat. Lauryn Hill on Audiogalaxy and you'll find it easy. It's a lot of fun.

trying to think of some funky hip-hop to recommend for ya, but like flux, i'm drawing a blank. i mean, what else are you listening to? give me a ball-park, so i'm not just recommending obvious shit. i mean, just how much hip-hop have you been/are you listening to?

OK recent purchases:

Bubba Sparxx
Aesop Rock
Aim
New Bobby Digital

I really like stuff on Grand Central etc, but am quite into anything from Dilated Peoples to Dre and especially anything that's RZA produced. But I really really got into Outkast last weekend- so I guess I'm looking for some Hip Hop to smoke to that's not too dark. Does that make sense?

Given what yr saying, the first thing that pops into my head is "go buy a copy of Operation: Doomsday by MF Doom".

It's a great record, it mostly sounds like a stoned MC rhyming over muzak and lite FM. It's a lot of fun, especially "Rhymes Like Dimes" "The M.I.C." and "I hear Voices".

It's got a great unique lo-fi charm and quirkiness about it, and it's funky and most of it is danceable.

If I had the tech, I know I'd be wanting to make a bootleg version with the vocal of "Rhymes Like Dimes"....

Mystikal's newish album is quite Outkast-y...

(IMHO - but I tend to see similarities differently to most peeps)

And that Saian Supa Crew record is dismal. Avoid.

As someone that likes OUTKAST, I can recommend looking for Hard 2 Obtain, Roni Size - In Tha Mode and anything by Herbaliser.

Editied to add that I truly love the B.O.B video.

Herbaliser definitely.

And on a slightly different note... the new New Flesh album, Understanding, is pretty damn good.

Job's coo. Not met your mate yet though.

And yeah, Mystikal is the JB copyist (but who isn't?)

Second that New Flesh record - I really wanted to hate it for being ponce-hop or whatever we're calling it this week, but it's pretty good.

Mmn. I'd never heard it (the New Flesh record) called ponce-hop, but those people who pointed out the dancehall, garage, rnb influences were all... startling right. It grows on one with more listening... very infectious, bouncing away.

Might I add that Goodie Mob are very close brethren of Outkast and both sport the sounds of Organized Noise Productions. I can't comment on World Party, but Soul Food andStill Standing are both great albums. They're definitely more subdued and a bit darker than Aquemini or Stankonia, but clearly along the lines of SouthernPlaylistic and ATLiens. Then there's the Dungeon Family's recent disc, Even in Darkness... I've not heard it yet, but it's Outkast, Goodie Mob and others backed again by Organized Noise Productions. I haven't bought any discs in a while, but it's near the top of the list next time I go.....

This might be what crogbert is talking about, but. Awhile ago I was flipping throw the TV and came across a DC station that shows Much Music feed, along with it's own music stuff. They showed a video that struck me as cool, but I missed the bit where you're told who it's by.

Song was very similiar to the Outkast I've heard and I swear I saw Dre in it (he's the one who looks like he belongs in P Funk right?) Song was a total party number. Something about a train. The video was basically a bunch of people partying on a train.

Anyone know what I'm raving about?

Trans DF express by The Dungeon Family, altough there is train partying on B.O.B
