archiving threads

Shouldn't we be archiving "Classic Barbelith" threads to be kept elsewhere? I've been going through the back pages of the music forum, and finding numerous threads which contain interesting discussions, information, recommendations, etc that should really be placed in some kind of time capsule. Nearly every forum has this...

I think we should make a special "Barbelith's greatest hits" webpage... it would be useful in documenting the community at its best, and in bringing in new members if they stumble upon our archives on a Google search or something.

I obviously would be willing to help put this together, though I'm really quite clueless at the actual creation of webpages.

In the short-term, if anyone wanted to do this, they should feel free. In the long term, clearly this should be integrated somehow into Barbelith itself...

I think it would be relatively simple to integrate this into Barbelith proper.

First of all you set up a read-only forum called something like....oh I don't "archives". OK, then you name someone to be the Barbelith archivist and give the archivist the ability to move posts to the "archives". Of course, you could just add the archivist bit into the duties of the moderators.

I think I've got some s'where, from a previous incarnation of the board prolly, 'cos weren't we going to publish a Barbelith book once, ages ago, with a few threads included in it? I'm sure I volunteered to edit stuff then never got round to it.

I was going through the music forum the other night too. 20 pages of threads down there and lots of them are useless. I imagine the other forums are the same way. Maybe, before the site opens back up, we should do some housekeeping and get rid of some of them.

Then there's the personal threads in Conversation, the "Who Are You?" stuff (which I'm thinking of starting just the now). They disappear and then the same threads get started every couple of months. Maybe on that front, we could just archive the personal info of those who are comfortable w/having their personal info archived.

I do clear out the Books forum every couple of months, because there are so many topics asking for info or which only get a couple of replies - but there are some lengthy and good threads which I have kept... but I think the more chatty threads (in Books this often boils down to 'what are you reading right now' or 'can you recommend any decent SF books?') can actually be quite good when they roll round - certainly they're an easy entry point. Not that this matters if the community is not accepting new members...

It WILL be accepting them again soon. And it certainly wouldn't do any harm to clear out some of the crapper threads - high colonic style - that have become stuck on the board...

[analogy extended - 'conversation' equals fibre - mass of it engorged, subsequently excreted / removed. Other fora = repositories of actually useful information - equivalent of vitamins and the like... Occasionally 'fibrous' threads get started in non-conversation fora. At this point, big pipes have to be shoved up the board's ass and all the crap washed away...]

Actually - would it save on bandwidth if the site was mirrored elsewhere?

Bumping this, because I think it's a good idea.

Me, too. I noticed the thread, actually, doing this. The Headshop is bare... Does anyone have Zen?Time Please's "Men's Auxilliary of SCUM" thread and stuff surrounding that discussion?

I can't find that one, but if you look back over the older pages of stuff in the Head Shop, there's plenty of similar stuff...

Ah but they're just not the same, Fly. One of its friends is down there, but it doesn't have the chutzpah.

I did some cleaning in the Comics board...and a lot of stuff I didn't clean up feels a bit...dated.

Reviews of single issue comics with speculation on what is comign up in issues that have come out a long time ago.

Maybe we should have some kind of criteria around what we archive and what we blow away?
