So, the new version of the old album comes out on the 12th. The following is on the Amazon US site

In Search of... is either an elaborate in-joke or the Neptunes' rather unsuccessful attempt to document the craziness they've experienced since ascending from suburban skate-rat status to membership on the R&B A list. They seem to be going for a Lenny Kravitz-meets-Faith No More sound, which would have made for great music had the experiment succeeded. The duo's signature style is deliberately played down in favor of garage-band instrumentation and a series of identical, preprogrammed Hip-Hop 101 beats. Although a fairly interesting framework has been crafted, Pharrell's voice, effective on Jay-Z's "I Just Wanna Love U," is simply not strong enough to hold down an entire album. N.E.R.D.'s choice of subject matter--binging on drugs and strippers, getting fake love in the clubs, realizing that most people are full of crap, et cetera--may be of interest to other pop stars or those who aspire to that status. The Jamiroquai-esque "Things Are Getting Better" successfully mines this vein, as does the album's most exciting song, "Rock Star." Unfortunately, the latter's impact is dulled by its remarkable similarity to the Beasties' superior "So What'cha Want." The Neptunes may have experienced international stardom, but they are still nerds. --Rebecca Levine

Someone tell me she doesn't know what she's talking about. Someone tell me the new album will be at least half as good as the original version. Please!

sorry, i'm confused. not by the stoopid statement you reprinted - they obviously haven't got a clue! but by the whole nerd album thing. why are they releasing a new version of the old album?

Classic music critic response to hip-hop... It'd make me angry if it wasn't such a dumb cliche. Sure, there's a lot of celebration of mindless hedonism on that record, but there's also a good deal of social comment that she's either ignoring or has just missed - 'Lapdance' is actually about politicians currying favour with the electorate ("they keep sayin': ooh baby you want me?"), 'Provider' and 'Bobby James' are pretty much straight-up anti- drug songs.

nikon: the original version of In Search Of... ended up being recalled/deleted (ie, it basically became a limited edition album - if you've got a copy, feel lucky...), because N.E.R.D. decided they wanted to re-record it with live instrumentation instead of samples etc. Thus causing many people who have enjoyed the Neptunes production so far to say "what the fuck are they thinking?"

I think the jury's still out on whether they decided to re-record it, or their record company decided for them. I've heard it both ways.

Um, then what's the deal with the Import that Amazon is selling? Sounds like the original to me.

What, the one it describes on the page you've linked to as "Special Limited Edition"? As I said, it's a limited edition - doesn't mean that Amazon won't have any copies, just that there are a finite number of them available.

Ok, so I didn't read all of it. I'll go hide in the courner now.
