Hm. Personally I only like about half of The White Album, and at best two or three songs on Abbey Road. I really wish they had broken up before they had done those records, but glad that they stopped after that - I think that the music on those records is far more ordinary and 'classic rock', and doesn't work for me the way that Rubber Soul, Revolver or Magical Mystery Tour does...

The Kinks are better than all of them...as far as white English bands are concerned anyways.
As far as sixties rock'n'roll goes I'll take ? & the Mysterians or the Sonics over any of those bands; remember, rock'n'roll is American and we've always done it better.

The B side of Abby Road is the greatest album side ever put to wax. That said, I must agree with Flux: Beatles vs. Stones is a tired argument and one that is based strictly on a matter of opinion. It doesn't stimulate debate or help people learn about music that they wouldn't have otherwise heard about. I encourage everyone to give this up and go check out the Song Pimpin Club thread instead.

Oh. Cop Killer, the Sonics fuckin rocked but they only released about two or three albums worth of material (that has been repackaged dozens of times, a la Hendrix). Important band? Yeah. But hardly the same cultural impact as the Beatles or Stones. Or NKOTB for that matter.

STONES! STONES! STONES!

The only post-65 Beatles tunes I like are the one's Ringo did.

In theory, the Rolling Stones should be the worst band in history - looking at their history they do absolutely everything that shouldn't be done..

But stick on 'Exile..' or 'Sticky Fingers..' or their really early stuuf, and such petty concerns fade away with the realisation that THEY'RE FAKKING BRILLIANT!

Jimi Hendrix

[edited to add: Because he pushed the boundaries and rocked like a motherfucker at the same time. And I like both the Stones and the Beatles.]

Reason #1 to get irritated with The Beatles: the continued deification of John Lennon. I can't help but think of that scene in Imagine (the documentary, not the simplistic and cliched schmaltzfest of a song), with Lennon himself trying to explain to the starstruck would-be disciple that he's *just some guy

Yup. Jesus and Sidhartha Gautama said the same thing....

Why the fuck should I give two shits about the cultural importance in deciding what band I like better? It's a shit argument that's just trying to rationaliz opinions.

I think the most telling thing in the whole debate was that after the Beach Boys put out Pet Sounds, the Beatles felt they had to up the ante and put out Sgt. Pepper's...and then the Stones weighed in with The Worst Album They Ever Did "Her Satanic Magesty's Request. (or a title like it)".

The Stones were a great blues band that has been a nostalgia act for the last 30 years. The Beatles were a band that changed things.

Besides, both of the fail in comparison to The Knack.

In my second post I said that all this band vs. band crap was just a matter of opinion. I was hoping that people would give up on arguing about who was the better band and starting talking about who was more important to the evolution of pop music, hence my comments about the Sonics and NKOTB.

Anyhow, you win the angry punk of the day award. Fashionable you, congratulations.

I'm too good looking to be a punk...

And, the Sonics helped to forge an underground rock scene, which was also helped by bands like ? & the Mysterians, that had the D.I.Y. ethic that punk rock ripped off. Bands like the Wailers and Sonics helped make underground music a viable thing to strive for. In my opinion that's far more culturally important than making girls scream.

Fair enough I suppose, though I think the Beatles did a little more than make girls scream.

As for the Sonics, Wailers ect- I live in Tacoma so I know.

The making girls scream was directed towards NKOTB (who, in actuality, no one cared about, they were the New Kids On the Block when people cared about them, then they became NKOTB after losing popularity, and trying to say that they were more "mature" or whatever), because, for a second, I forgot that the Beatles used to be that pop band.

1) Personally, I think that nothing is more culturally important than making teenage girls scream.

2) When the Beatles rocked, like on "I'm Down", "Revolution" (the single version, not Revolution #1 from the White Album), their cover of "Long Tall Sally", "Helter Skelter", or damn near anything on a bootleg from their early days in Hamburg or at the Cavern, the Beatles fucking rocked.

I'm yet to hear anything by the Stones that rocks as much as the Beatles in full flight.

3) The Beatles weren't just influenced by white American rock'n'roll. They covered Chuck Berry so many times it boggles the mind, as well as covering Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, Berry Gordy, Arthur Crudup and god knows how many others. Sure, they certainly had a thing for white rockabilly/rock'n'rollers like Elvis and Carl Perkins, and for Brill Building pop, but they were by no means primarily about white rock'n'roll.

4) Hermans Hermits!
