There is a very smart, in-depth interview with Fugazi's Guy Picciotto on Pitchfork Media this week.

Check it out, it's very well done.

Haven't quite finished it, but thanks a lot for the link.

quote: Seeing Fugazi play live was never difficult in D.C. From countless local benefits to the annual end-of-summer Fort Reno show, there was ample opportunity to stand with a usually diverse crowd of people outside, in church halls, on the mall, you name it...

...Even if you haven't picked up The Argument yet, the chances that Fugazi has played an important part in your musical upbringing are about as good as catching at least one of them standing next to you at any local show in D.C.

It's when I read things like this that I realize just how unhip I am. I really gotta get out more.

Flux, you wanna reccomend any places to look for, feel free.

Do you mean shows/venues to go to in hopes of seeing a member of Fugazi in the audience?

Um, they are at soooooo many shows that it's fairly easy - when I lived there, I was only going to maybe four or five shows per month, but I think the only show I saw that a member of Fugazi *wasn't* at was Radiohead, and that was only because it was a surprise gig, because I know from interviewing Guy myself a few years ago, he's a big fan of them. Oh, I didn't see any of them at the Ben Folds Five show I saw at Georgetown University, but I don't think anyone would expect to see them there, right?

I can't remember ever seeing Ian at any shows, but Joe Lally and Guy were omnipresent - Guy is especially nice and friendly, he's the type to go to shows alone and chat with folks in the crowd. And then see you on the street three weeks later, recognize you, and say hello.

I'm not sure what the club schedule in DC is right now, but they hit a lot of the shows at the Black Cat, and I saw them at shows at the 9:30 too. There's a couple tiny venues which I honestly can't recall the names of, but I saw them there too - I think the place I saw Dub Narcotic Sound System was called something like the "Kappa House" - Joe was at that show.

I haven't been to DC in a long time, but I went on a daytrip there last spring, and I managed to see Ian Svenonius on the street in Adams Morgan. That was neat.

It's weird, I saw 'celebs' more often in DC than I have living in and around NYC...

Acctually, I was talking about anything. I've really spent a large portion of my life trying to run from DC, and focusing more on Baltimore. (why? long story) So I'm really lost on all the fun spots in DC from clubs to shops.

Acctually, now that I think about it, Guy and Jen, from Tsunami, were at the first show I ever saw at the Black Cat (Shudder To Think) Forgot about that.

I don't know how well I could answer that now...I've been away for a long time, and from that interview, Guy gives the impression that a lot of venues have changed. I think that if you wanted to have a good time, hipster style, Adams Morgan is the place to be, there's a lot of cool stuff there. The best record shop in DC is there, no question - DCCD. There's a lot of bars and clubs there, but I can't give you names or anything. Dupont Circle is alright, the residence house I lived in for my first semester was just outside of it, and there's some decent shops and places to eat there. Dupont Circle is the epicenter of gay culture in the city, but not being gay myself, I never really paid much attention.

A lot of my time in DC, I spent around Georgetown, mostly because my girlfriend at the time lived there, she went to Georgetown University. And most of the time, we just acted like shut-ins, or wandered around the pretty parts of that area.

A lot of my friends went to school with me at the Corcoran, so a lot of the social life had more to do with house parties and making our own fun than going out - I have a lot of great anecdotes about that period of time. My indie type friends at the school were more in with the DC indie crowd, and went to a lot of shows and parties, and I'd occasionally go with them.

For anyone who's interested, there's a 5 page interview with Ian MacKaye in the local college rag Emmie, as well as a handful of other interviews in the archives section.

As long as I'm bumping threads...

If anyone's interested, Ian MacKaye's post-Minor Threat, pre-Fugazi band Embrace is coming out w/ an expanded CD next week. Also, there's a nice interview w/ Ian & Mike Watt at the otherwise dreadful looking StarPolish.com: Part 1 and Part 2 But the real reason I bumped this thread is because Fugazi are going to be in the UK in June for anyone so inclined. Tourdates are:

I think Fugazi must be one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Hopefully when I'm studying in London next year that's when they'll be coming through.

So what are the US tour dates? Please tell me they're coming to NY and not just DC.

I wouldn't expect Fugazi to come to the New York area til around 2003 at best. They tend to come around here every three years or so, and they were here in 2000. Also, if they do come to New York, they might play somewhere else in the state - Buffalo, Albany, Poughkeepsie, somewhere in Westchester, etc.
