Okay, let's put our heads together and think of as many straight-ahead pure love songs which are not specific to gender or sexuality.

The Knowledge +1

'MORNING GLORY' by Jamiroquai
'COME FIND YOURSELF' by Fun Loving Criminals
'MOVE CLOSER' by Phyllis Nelson
'NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN' by The Moody Blues
'WHERE MY LOVE IS' by Madonna
"A lot of people talk about, dining in and eating out,
I guess that's what this song is all about.
I know that this is not the ideal conversation,
and you don't have to listen if you don't have the time.
But let me remind you in case you don't already know, dining out can happen
down below" (Sorry, love this song).
'WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN' by Percy Sledge
'ETERNAL FLAME' by The Bangles
'CENTRAL RESERVATION' by Beth Orton
'HEY LOVER' by LL COOL J
'INSIDE MY LOVE' by Minnie Ripperton
'IT'S GREAT WHEN WE'RE TOGETHER' by Finlay Quaye
'PORCELAIN' by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD' by Prince

Many of the songs on the Magnetic Field's "69 Songs About Love" are non-gender-specific, or are love songs in which the gender of the subject is ambiguous, meaning either that the subject has a different gender to the actual singer or is singing about a same-sex object.

the haus -- i came in here intending to say 'magnetic fields' and you beat me to the punch. 69 love songs floors me. i especiall dig 'punk rock love', 'come back from san francisco' and 'all my little words'.
sleater-kinney write the most beauiful love songs, such as 'one more hour' from dig me out and 'leave you behind'from all hands on the bad one.
'to bring you my love' by peej is beautiful. and 'joga' by bjork, 'mothers day' by bitch and animal, 'heaven is a truck' by pavement, 'everything beautiful is far away' by grandaddy...
(maybe this is just me thinking they're about love when they're not? i guess these are just love songs to me)

Many REM love songs are extremely ambiguous about gender/sexuality, for pretty obvious reasons.

"At My Most Beautiful" and "Be Mine" being the best examples...

Any Morrissey or Smiths song. 'The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get' is this evening's personal favourite.

Cop Killer

"You Tear Me Up" or "What Do I Get?" by the Buzzcocks would both work.

oh- and:

Luv Luv Luv by Pansy Division.

" luv luv luv luv luv
and it sounds like
blah blah blah blah blah blah
cause they really mean
SEX! SEX! SEX!
people just want to connect.....
we don't feel like we think we should
not like we were taught we would
we've been fed too much bull about luv luv luv luv luv......"

I'm just feeling really, really cynical at the moment......

The Return Of Rothkoid
09:57 / 25.01.02
"Nobody" , "Grapefruit Moon", "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You", "Picture In A Frame", "Little Trip To Heaven (On The Wings Of Your Love)", "Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again", "Poncho's Lament", "Please Call Me, Baby", "I'll Shoot The Moon". And a couple more. All by Tom Waits. Lyrics (with mishearings, dammit) here.

You've been cribbing from my recent playlists again, suds...

Something occurs to me: aren't probably the majority of love songs non-gender specific? Surely there are more songs, or at least as many songs, that just say 'you' instead of 'that girl/boy' etc... But a culture that tends to assume heterosexuality as the default norm will read these songs as heterosexual, and teaches us to do the same.

I'm sure there's lots more to say about this too...
