oh. my god! bill callahan is so terrifying! i'd rather interview the mogwai boys than him. man! he's so angry and yet sexy at the same time. i love bill callahan. but i shouldn't, of course, because he's a married man. but what the who.
people who shout out at shows usually say the stupidest stuff tho. one time, at a pavement show, this one boy shouted out, 'you guys rock!' and there was this really embrassing silence afterwards. eeep.

OK; question.

What is the sample at the start of 'Mao Tse Tung Said' by Alabama Three? The guy talking about 'Love is the only weapon? Shit... Bullshit!'

In two parts, via the Machines Of Loving Grace FAQ comes the answer: quote:Where is that 'I'll fight' loop from in Serpico?
The actual sample is from the last hour at Jonestown, Guyanna prior to the mass suicide of a large religious cult. One of the church members had a microcassette recorder and actually captured Jim Jones' final speech to his 'flock'. The tape has been circulating underground for some time. The audio quality is very poor, but the important events are understandable. Towards the end of 'Serpico' there's another sample from the same tape in which Jones says 'Hurry my children, hurry. No more pain, no more pain.'
and quote:The Jim Jones sample at the beginning of Serpico can also be found in the song "Mao Tse Tsung Said" by a group called the Alabama 3 (or A3 as they are usually listed) off their album Exile On Coldharbour Lane. They actually use quite a bit of the speech, if not all of it. It's kind of oddly used cause the song is more bouncy than Serpico making it weird to juxtapose how the quote was used by MOLG. Anyways, the band is fairly good, basically making gospel/blues/country music but adding techno beats to it.
* Thanks Goes Mike Benkovich for submitting!
There's a transcript of the suicide tape it was culled from here. There's some info on Jonestown here (a survivor?) and here and here.

Would anybody happen to know where I might find English translations of the Cornershop songs with Punjabi lyrics?

Take it you mean '6am Jullander Shere' rather than 'Norwegian Wood' here?

There are a lot of great links on this page which may help - but I couldn't say for sure you'll find your answer...

Yeah, that song, "We're In Yr Corner", "Spectral Mornings", etc...

I was looking through that page just before I posted this question, and haven't found anything just yet... kinda frustrating. I'm very curious to know what the lyrics in Punjabi are cos I love his English lyrics so much, I'm also curious if the lyrics in Punjabi are written specifically with content meant only for those who would speak the language, since the majority of the lyrics are in English.

Is there anything on TLC's 'crazysexycool', apart from Waterfalls, that's any good? I mean should is it worth getting, or should I try to track down the single (shouldn't be too hard)?

That dialogue on the Alabama 3 song is Jim Jones just prior to the massacre??
How brilliant is that?
Very brilliant.
Wow.

On the subject of Cornershop, i hear rumours that they are planning to remix one of their new songs online for 24 hours...
Is this true? Anyone know when and where?

Um, they are doing it TODAY starting at 19:00 GMT on
Cornershop.com.

They are streaming a 24 hour mix of the song "Spectral Mornings", which is already 15 minutes on the LP. I think that it's the best song on the new LP, it's amazing. I'll be checking it out, for sure.

Other TLC songs from Crazysexycool of note: Creep, Red Light Special, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Diggin On You, Somethin' Wicked This Way Comes.

It's a good record, if a bit dated. Waterfalls is my favorite too.

AUDIOGALAXY

- what is it?
- how the dickens does it work? What's all this "availability" nonsense?
- should I avoid using it at work?

AUDIOGALAXY

It's a file-sharing service, a la Napster. It's not very conspicuous, but I would use it at work with supreme discretion.

Audiogalaxy is a pretty small program, you get a 'satellite', and you go to the Audiogalaxy site, look up whatever you want to find, click the button, and it ends up in yr satellite queue, you download it from other users who have it on their harddrives. While you have yr satellite connected, other folks download from your music files on yr harddrive. Audiogalaxy is a strictly music-file sharing system, unlike Morpheus or Gnutella in which you can share virtually any file imaginable.

I love Audiogalaxy - it has an immense, diverse library, and a huge number of people connected, so the odds of getting obscure weird stuff is much higher. Even on my relatively slow modem, downloads are pretty fast. You can set up files to download without having to be online. You can link to songs for other people to download. It's great. A lot of major labels obviously block their artists for copyright reasons, but you can work around that by creative searching - ie, you wouldn't look for "Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever" cos it won't be there, but if you look for "Magical Mystery Tour Strawberry Fields Forever" you will. It's great.

Of course, Audiogalaxy is only for PC users...

If you have a Mac, you should go for Limewire. Pretty similar deal.

Oh, about 'availability' - it depends on how many people have something on a harddrive. Some tracks are only on a handful of people's harddrives, so you might have to wait til those people happen to be online.

For example, I'm fairly sure I'm one of maybe at best three or four people who have "Experimental Fashion" by Banjo-V on my harddrive. So that song will be in a very limited availability...

I'm pretty amazed. Not hearing about the Magnetic Fields until recently must have meant that you didn't read any music publications in the year 2000. Everybody was writing about 69 Love Songs, everybody.

Umm....actually, I for one don't tend to read "music publications". Books are better. That's why I listen to Barbeloids talking about music.

Sorry.

Well, that's a good idea. Congratulations, I suppose.

Of course, yr embargo on the music press would have also had to include publications like the New York Times.

For example, here is an article from this past Sunday's New York Times Magazine:

You need to register to read it, though.
