is there a site you could recommend?

Um, could you be specific about what sort of thing yr looking for, ie, how are you defining 'hard to find' --- out of print? import? hard to find in Tower/Virgin/etc, or hard to find in well-stocked indie shops?

these are all the best online resources that I'm aware of:

GEMM

Other Music

Forced Exposure

Netsounds

Insound

Dusty Groove

Stooz

Scratch

Mordam

Clairecords

Midheaven

For size of stock, speed and reliability, I cannot recommend ACTION RECORDS highly enough. They're UK based, but I've heard many good reports of 'em from overseas customers.

Simple search facility, and they've got a pretty big 2nd hand section too, or they did last time I looked.

Well, truthfully, I'm not much of a teaser.

note: i'm fairly certain that Action Records is a part of the GEMM system... GEMM allows you to mail order from a syndicate of hundreds of record stores throughout the UK, you can compare and contrast prices and stocklists (which includes used/out of print records)...it's fantastic. I've ordered a few things a while back from them...

theyve got it (GEMM, that is) - thanks to you both!

Just wondering if anyone here's ordered anything from Anomolous records, or from Aquarius records in SF? I'm really keen to get a copy of this, but am not sure how reliable either of 'em are. And, of course, you just can't get the fucker in the UK...

Now I'm just dying with curiosity. If it's something you couldn't tell all the terribly open-minded people around here it must be just horrendous.

Note how I got the teasing in there without actually knowing what it was? I'm good, I am.

Zoom.

Tell us, bitchie! No one's going to tease you here, and if they do, I will personally lay the smackdown on them, whilst singing N*Sync's 'Pop'.

Would it help if I admitted leaving work on Wednesday afternoon whilst rocking out to "The Best of George Michael" on my discman?

jeez - its not really a mystery, its just that Im buying it based solely on one song (a habit which has brought many pleasant surprises, and only few bad ones)

the band is spearmint, and I cant find them in any of my stores

The two-CD one? That fucking rocks.

But wait.

Once more, I've revealed too much.

I'm a proud owner of that George Michael 2cd greatest hits thing too. I fucking love "Freedom 90" and "Kissing a Fool" so much that it hurts sometimes...

I've never heard of Spearmint.

But I did hear Starsailor for the first time today, because my friend wanted me to check them out, and I was pretty horrified. They sound like an unholy cross between Sade and Steel Eye Span...

Or an unholy cross between Tim Buckley and Tim Buckley, but somehow .. not good.

I'd take them over coldplay though, cos at least they don't mind being a bit melodramatic and pretentious at times. And the singer sounds EXACTLY like the "what, the curtains?" boy from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which never fails to amuse.

You know what? I really dislike both Buckleys. I think they both are crap middle of the road songwriters, and the only good thing Jeff ever did was sing a Shudder To Think song that Craig Wedren would have sang a lot better, and with a great deal more personality.

Their influence, particularly that of Jeff, has inflicted a great many crap bands on the general public, and we can probably be quite grateful that Jeff died young so that we never really had to deal with the guy having any more of his sap ballads released to the public.

But that's just my opinion.

b) what is it? i must know.

She already told you. It's a record by a band called Spearmint.

Coldplay singer on "Yellow" sounds like...

...Alan Partridge

I maintain that the guy from Coldplay just sounds like Dave Matthews with a Brit accent, and that Coldplay sounds like the Dave Matthews Band if they fired all the black guys...

Fuck yes! Amen to that, Flux! I haven't heard enough of Tim Buckley to have an opinion other than "boring white-boy-tries-to-get-funky-muso-wank", but as far as I'm concerned, Jeff Buckley is the fucking antichrist.

Seriously, no amount of over the top, emotional button pushing, wailing attempts at being deep and soulful can disguise the fact that Jeff Buckley was just a posing pretty boy with too many buttons undone playing excrutiatingly awful muso crap that sounded like something a Led Zeppelin covers band would come up with if you forced them at gunpoint to write a "soulful" original tune in less than ten minutes.

However, I don't think we should be grateful that he died young, because, with his death, he immediately went from being some guy no one (save for a few critics) gave half a toss about, to being The Late Great Jeff Buckley, whose talent will be unsurpassed in our time.

I think we should start an anti-Buckley club. Who's with me?

The Count is right about poor, beautiful Jeff. The thing is, he could have been a great singer if he had been able to supress the urge to sing like Robert Plant.

I'm actually a big fan of Tim Buckley though. I will freely admit, however, that his studio albums suck a big shiny fat one. And please, please, don't go near the last few albums he recorded near the end of his life (the west coast white boy soul shit).

His live albums are where its at. Find the version of Starsailor he performed on the Monkeys TV show and then see if you still hate the man.

And if you do, thats cool too.

Until recently I was defiently anti-Buckley .. but then I heard some old Tim B. session tracks on John Peel and have to admit that they were .. bloody lovely, actually.

Helloooo my friends.

I am going to check all the sites you've all listed, but if anyone ever comes across early nineties Dave Stewart (and the Spiritual Cowboys) singles, could ya drop me a line. I've a bunch of them but would like to round out my collection. I honestly don't know what all is out there 'cause I've yet to find a reliable discography for him.

Thanks in advance,

Zoom.

Im really disappointed with my new-favorite record shop. theres at least one ultra-helpful bastard there who said he could order a shitload of things (including spearmint) for me, but everyone else is utterly useless

pah, people
