New Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Studio Album To Be Released (1.14)
On April 23, 2002, Matador Records will be releasing The Jon Spencer Blue Explosion’s first studio album in almost four years. This time around, Spencer has recruited veteran producer Steve Jordan and engineer Don Smith, who have both produced, engineered, and played on records by the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, and U2. Musicians that will appear on the record include Elliott Smith, Bernie Worrell, Dr. John, and Steve Jordan. The double LP/CD, called Plastic Fang is JSBX’s follow-up to their 1998 release Acme.

Same thing he was doing on the last Guided by Voices record, I suppose...playing some damn good organ or piano.

Spencer makes everything into rock n roll...

Only 'cos he wants to be Kim Salmon, though. Well, old Kim Salmon...

As long as there is no "touching" baladery it doesn't sound too bad actually. Dr John though, that'll be worth hearing.

C'mon, Unc...with Jon it's always about "touching," isn't it?

Case in point: "Full Grown."

I wonder if there will be any worthwhile music on this one. I find that JSBX averages 2.5 good songs per LP, and the rest is pure drivel...

Oooh, oooh! Will this one have a track on where Jon Spencer shouts "Talkin bout... BLUES! EXPLOSION!" in a really stupid voice?

Let's hope so!

And it's all about the live show with them, anyhow. The ear-splitting, relentless live atom bomb they produce on a stage. Oh, and let's not forget that Russell Simins is the most solid drummer you'll ever hear in your life.

Only 2.5, Flux? Hmm...I'd agree with you if we're talking about the eponymously titled first album...

I've seen JSBX live three times now since 1997, and they were weak each time.

They are pretty much just an arty novelty band, so I never do expect much from them.

I can tell you right now what the good JSBX tunes are:

Dang
BluesXplosion Man
Can't Stop
Wail
Luvin Machine (automator remix)
Calvin
Talk About The Blues
Magical Colors remix version

Well, as long as we're speaking in the Empty Subjective tense:

You're wrong.

No way, man!

PS: There's only enough room on Barbelith for one Wowee Zowee fictionsuit!

I, Libertine

Heh.

Maybe so, but who wants to wear a Terror Twilight fictionsuit?

I totally agree with Flux on this one. Orange is a good party record but everything afterwards is utterly inessential.

Except for mebbe the Killah Priest bit on the remix EP.

Then you'd be missing out on

Skunk
Fuck Shit Up
Rocketship
Eyeballin'

not to mention some cool stuff on ACME, the titles of which always slip away...but Talk About the Blues is one...

A friend of mine who DJs always slips that song in, and it gets all the punk kids dancing with no fail...

Boss Hog pisses all over JSBX. And not in a nice way.

If were talking essential JSBX I'll chip in with, Afro and Soul type cast. Pre Orange.

I find Boss Hogg kind of boring, except for Cristina.

And I'll add Write A Song and Pant Leg to that list of essential pre-Orange songs. (And this belongs on the Music laughs thread, but...)

Vanilla Ice hangs out backstage at a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show. After the show, Russell Simmins promises that he will call the rapper the next time they are working on an album. Ice leaves the club and Jon Spencer just kind of shrugs at the other band members.
