Perfect pitch

I know a couple guys who have this gift. One says he just noticed one day that he could tell a C from a C# or a G from a D anywhere on the piano, and that he doesn't know where it comes from and assumes he was born with it. Lucky bastard.

The other guy learned it. He said he had to train his ear to hear the "color" of the notes, and that anybody can learn. But he's also very, very gifted musically. One of those guys who can pick up any instrument and will immediately be skilled with it (good tone, good embeshure where applicable). Lucky bastard (although I suppose the thirteen plus years of music education had something to do with it).

I want perfect pitch. Seems pretty useful. How long does it normally take? I've got a good ear for tones and tuning, will that give me a headstart? Is this color deal accurate?

Hm. My understanding was that this wasn't so much something someone could learn, so much as a special skill which someone could refine, meaning, if you don't have it, you never fucking will.

It would be really cool, especially for me, a guy who has forgotten how to play nearly every song he's ever penned...

It's damn near impossible to acquire. You just have it or you don't.

That said, it's not like non-musical people have it. But when y ou start playing with music, it'll make itself apparent.

So... no idea. Hunt on the web. I'm pretty much sure it's impossible to just acquire, out of the blue.

And it really messes you up listening to stuff that's out of tune, eg, singing in a choir when the organ's just a couple of microtones out, and everyone else can cope and you're having to detune yourself. Which I've known happen to people I know.

there's always been this stupid fucking advertisement in "keyboard". It promises perfect pitch. it really looks like an infomercial which i loathe with a passion. but. if you're interested it's (usually) there.

This happens to me anyway. I can't stand hearing non-professional violin players, or even a lot of guitar players. It makes me cringe.
