There are very few albums that are as good as In The Nightside Eclipse but here are a few of the better black metal ones:
emperor:wrath of the tyrant
mayhem: de mysteris dom sathanas
burzum: burzum/aske
enslaved: blodhemn
darkthrone: a blaze in the northern sky
immortal: at the heart of winter and Pure Holocaust

Thanks,
I have Wrath of the tyrant which is also good.

I have been meaning to pick up some mayhem and burzum, on a side note have you read any stuff about what burzum has been saying lately? Pretty monotheistic.
I only have one immortal track, I will end up getting more.

I will have to look into Enslaved and Darkthrone.

I highly recommend not picking up anything by Burzum, because Burzum fucking sucks and Varg Vikernes is quite possibly the biggest facsist asshole out there, very big on the the whole Nazi thing, fuck Burzum.

Empororer, however, is the best black metal band ever, buy everything by this band, they fucking rule. They are extremely intelligent and non-fascist to boot.

And perhaps try to pick up Black Metal by Venom to see where these crazy Norweigians got their ideas from. Loud, raw, and a whole lotta fun.

I think the newest release of Emperor is simply magnific...

One of my favorite black metal albums is Covenant's Nexus Polaris, they retoke the King Diamond's style, just fabulous. Another big one is Daemonarch's Hermeticum, totally Bathory style, even as it is a project, this Moonspell guys are awesome!!!

If you like Dimmu Borgir try to listen to Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia.

much of this is in icelandic. but there's enough english here to find your way around, and i think some of the music is excellent. esp. "minus", but which is more noise than black.
www.dordingull.com
(i think sólstafir and vígspá are black metal at least)
www.helviti.com
(think all the bands here are black metal)

as you can see i'm not really up with what black metal is per se, and i apologize for that. but i hope this helps.

funny aside. many norwegian bands try to sing in icelandic with hilarious results. many icelandic bands try to sing in english with hilarious results.

In fact I know "dimmuborgir" is a icelandic word meaning dark castle, why are the norwegian bands so atractted to Iceland?

just some guesswork. i don't think it's iceland per se. i think it's *icelandic*. there's this almost true myth that icelanders are speaking the tongue of the vikings as it was back in the 9th century. and since many of those norwegian black metal groups fancy themselves as vikings they sing in icelandic.

dimmuborgir is actually a place in iceland. it's a beautiful castle-like lava formation in the north. in modern icelandic it would mean dark cities actually. but castle is pretty close, and probably what it meant back then.

the thing about icelanders speaking viking-ish. well. there have been lots of sound changes since then. also written viking-ish used lots of strange contractions to save on calf-skin. but apart from that, a few weird metaphors and a handful of words that are not used any more, written viking-ish is a subset of written icelandic. though there have also been some changes in meaning of the words. case in point being borg and garður. borg meant castle, means city. garður meant city, means garden. stuff like this.

I'm rather new to black metal, but I've heard of a band called Ulver that seems interesting. Anyone know anything about them?

They started off playing really noisy black metal (as did all black metal bands, any given band of said genre started playing noise, more or less), they evolved into playing something that encorporated elements of black metal and elements of traditional Norweigian folk music. Extremely intelligent chaps, from the interviews that they gave in Lords Of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of Satanic Metal, which is an extaordinarily informative book on the Norweigian black metal scene (the members of which are fucking insane).

But everyone knows that Body Count are the best black metal band.

Yeah, I read Lords of Chaos. That's were I heard about them (and the rest of the loony fuckers...) They seemed like the only level-headed fellas in the book. And the acoustic album that was mentioned intrigued me. Thanks for the info.
