Christmas night was spent with a dear friend of mine, Hippy Mick. We spent the evening listening and getting inside music as we usually do, the diffeerence this time was that I brought over a selection of classic vinyl, one of which was a Bolourbox album.
Now I have to say that for 1985, these guys/gals were producing a clear proto-house sound, influenced by Chicago, pop, Funk,Reggae/Dub. Their Motown covers are incredible. I was blown away by the cut up sampling reminiscent of Coldcut then as I am now, especially tracks such as Edit teh Drgon and Just Give 'Em Whiskey. I believe they were pioneering the way for studio sounds and techniques emulated in the late 80's, early 90's.
Later Colourbox memebers went on to produce MARRS, Pump up the Volume
Colourbox are lordy
