A request about Jazz

This is different then the other thread. Hence why I'm breaking it off.

Every year or so someone posts asking for people to reccomend jazz records to them. The genre is just to big for them to get a hold of. The responces are always very mixed. Some free. Some be-bop. Some big band, etc.

I was wondering if someone who has a good knowledge of Jazz, was willing to do an article for the zine, about the different styles of jazz. Something to give people a handle on the different shades of jazz. This will probably also help them get a grip on jazz over all. Since it'll hopefully help them understand how Cecil Taylor can be in the same 'genre' as Louie Armstrong.

Anyone want to take on this task?

Not volunteering here... just wanted to say that I think your suggestion of "free associating" from one jazz artist to the next is rather brilliant.

Could you actually trace the degrees of separation throughout your record collection, or a part of it? In writing, I mean? I think that also would make for fascinating reading, and very jazzy to boot.

That would be one really long article. Maybe Flux might want to take it on. I don't think I could.

I'd be willing to contribute bits, but that's because my Jazz knowledege is bits. Unfortunately. I mean, I can fill you in on much of Miles but lose it towards the end, and besides, I know almost no Charlie Parker, which I ought to, as a contemporary in the period I really like.

Maybe it might have to be done as a group thang?

Would you be willing to do one defining the genre of "free jazz"?
Where it came from, where it's gone?
