new incarnation of Guns n Roses -- discuss

first and foremost, let me make it clear that i've never been a fan of G 'n' R, even back when they were the biggest band around.

obviously, during his 10 year absence from anything involving other people and music, Axl Rose is now completely irrelevant.

the constant delays of the newest "Guns N Roses" album, Chinese Democracy, underscores not only his lack of a place in today's rock scene (which, i might add, blows) as well as his own insecurities, but also his apparent lack of interest in making music. he's just doing it for the money here.

but if in fact Chinese Democracy turns out to be any good at all, it'll be because Buckethead's on it. man, that guy is my hero

He makes Slash look like the middle-aged guitarist for the Deep Purple cover band that plays at Jimmy's Crab Shack on the beach twice a month. oh wait, that's probably what he's doing right now, anyway.

Yes but "Chinese Democracy" has been in the works FOR-EVAH. I actually downloaded a song from the album (allegedly) last year.... eh. At this point, Axl's been teasing us all for so long - and how could it be the same without Slash?

I think he should start a new band if he wants to and let GNR rest in peace.

Is Tommy Stinson still in the line-up for the new GnR?

I pray Paul will fucking rescue Tommy and both of them can get back to doing great shit again. Neither can quite get it together with out each other.

Ok, so the last couple of 'Mats albums weren't great. But...

I think Tommy is in fact still in the lineup.

By the way, can I just mention how fun it is to juxtapose Christmas Carols with "Appetite For Destruction"?

VERY FUN.

But really - do you WANT to see another incarnation of GNR? Could it ever possibly be the same? ESPECIALLY without Slash?

G'n'R were fine in the 80s. but do we have to go there again? it's not so much the music or even the band as much as the die-hard UK fans who will take to the streets believing that Their Time Has Come. Mullets. Denim jackets with Iron Maiden patches. bleached drainpipe jeans. why, god, why?

foxxy, are there any recordings of g'n'r playing carols?

if not we should fake some.

Hell no!! GNR should be "waking up late and taking your credit card to the liquor store" for some Nightrain on Christmas Eve, NOT carolling!!

This is an intriguing idea...

I don't think so, but as sad as this is, what's Tommy Stinson to do? His album with Perfect is in limbo & he's dead broke. As shitty this whole Axl situation is, It sure beats the telemarketing gig he was doing.

I second the opinion about Buckethead.

Any band with Buckethead in it will get me to try them out.

Damn, I'm gonna go listen to all my 'Praxis' cds now.

G'n'R were just plain nasty - sub Aerosmith/Led Zep/etc crap. Let's not start all that again.

They can piss off with their Jack Daniel's fueled poo.

I liked the old GnR but your above statement and the accompanying scatalogical image of Axl made me laugh.

Slash was, and is, a nondescript Blues-rock player. Anyone could replace him.

The only member of the band who actually is Gn'R is Axl. The attitude, the voice, the... kilt... I'm not saying that's a good thing, mind. Although, in a silly kind of way, 'Nighttrain' is pretty good.

"Nighttrain" is not good in a silly way, it is good in the way that if fucking rocks. Slash is not a nondescript blues rocker, he was part of G'n'R, man, his attitude was just as important as Axl's. I really love Guns'n'Roses, they are definately in my top five; many of their fans may suck, but a band does not choose its fans. When G'n'R came out they were the dirtiest band out there, now there's plenty of bands that are dirty and it doesn't seem like Axl & co. are trying to push the envelope on that angle, or any other for that matter, I'll probably go see them, as they are one of my favorite bands.

Slash is a GREAT guitarist! Just listen to the break in "Rocket Queen!" Or his work in Paradise City.

Besides, he's SLASH.

Really? Did one of the guntwarts actually say/sing that?

Yeah, in 1989. Caused quite a furor at the time. It's from the song "One In A Million."

The charming lines, in context: quote: Police and Niggers, that's right
Get out of my way
Don't need to buy none of your
Gold chains today
I don't need no bracelets
Clamped in front of my back
Just need my ticket; 'til then
Won't you cut me some slack?

(stoopic chorus here)

Immigrants and faggots
They make no sense to me
They come to our country
And think they'll do as they please
Like start some mini-Iran,
Or spread some fuckin' disease
They talk so many goddamn ways
It's all Greek to me
Well some say I'm lazy
And others say that's just me
Some say I'm crazy
I guess I'll always be...
Axl Rose: sensitive human being.

It should be noted, however, that Axl pulled that song from all pressings of GNR Lies in 1999, and they rarely played it in concert.

Whether that was due to actual sensitivity, or a wish to avoid flack, I can't say.

The kilt was good, mind you, but the white bicycle shorts/catcher's chest protector combo was the pinnacle of metal style. Only Axl could rock that look. Can you imagine Fred Durst or that loser from Korn wearing that and still being perceived as hell on wheels?

Well, it is a Skrewdriver song...

The resistable rise of Reidcourchie

It is not a Skrewdriver song. It is a narrative piece, the songs about someone moving into LA for the first time froma small town, with small town red neck ideas. This is always trotted out whenever GnR are mentioned to be pointed at to say look they were racists (including Slash of course who is presumably rock musics Uncle Tom). It may not have been well thought out but it isn't pro-racist. As for the refrence to faggots, presumably GNRs hatred of homosexuals is what inspired them to be so heavily involved with the highly homophobic Freddie Mercury tribute but of course that was just for publicity et al.

There are so many reasons for Rose being a wanker, this song I'm afraid isn't one of them. It is however a good example of people racing to conclusions before the facts are in.
