random hip hop question

Maybe I'm just forgetting, but has anyone ever made a massive hip hop hit out of the opening bit of Otis Redding's "Hard To Handle"? and if not, why not? Lord, it's got to be the most obvious sample in the fucking universe, and it seems like a first class ticket to having a megahit to my ears...

or maybe somebody already has...I mean, SOMEBODY must've done SOMETHING with it...

Don't.

You'll give me ideas.

/me starts hunting for some Otis Redding CDs, and prays someone'll fix his music gear and send him a sampler soon.

NO! Don't do it unless you have at least three world class MCs to rhyme over it!

I've got the appropriate equipment...AKAI and Korg samplers, digital 8 track... all I need is Method Man, Ghostface, and Jay-Z, and me and the Otis Redding estate will be rolling in the cash...

Because it'd be nothing short of blasphemy! Dear God, it's bad enough that they did that crap cover of "What's Goin' On" without messin' with The Big O.

But to answer your question Flux, no it hasn't been done yet--and hopefully it never will be. But The Black Crowes covered "Hard To Handle" on their debut LP & The Plimsouls did a decent version "Can't Turn You Loose" on "Zero Hour".

No, man it wouldn't...it if was done right, it'd be fucking brilliant...

I'm not one of those 'Puff Daddy ruined that song forever' type of people...I tend to think most any sample is a form of reverence to the source material...

wow! I just found the answer to my question: I've happened upon an mp3 of Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and GZA freestyling over a loop of the Hard To Handle opening hook, it apparently is from an in studio Wu-Tang Clan radio performance circa 1993.

It's amazing.

what kind of sampler?

I've got a Korg, and an AKAI...I can't tell you model names offhand, but they are rad.

Akai S3000XL. It's nice. I'm learning it at the moment. Sadly my sequencer is ill, so I'm just building up samples "for later use". But yeah... muaha.
