Music Consumption/Economics thereof

Inspired by the *huge* list of Wu-Tang albums in Flux's thread, I've got a few general questions for everyone:

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?

Here are my answers

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?
350-400

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?
I'd say 4-5

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?
I've been buying online a lot lately

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?
20%, if that. And most of the CDs I buy used are "experimental" purchases I end up selling back.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

Very little; I never used Napster and have little interest in AudioGalaxy if it is going to compromise my computer's security at all.

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?
There are some CDs I've listened to once, some hundreds. I'd say a mode of 3.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first? up to 50% of what I buy. Like, whoever listed the Lift to Experience album in this forum, thank you, thank you, thankyou. I just got this and it blows me away.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full legnth CD?

I don't want to pay more than $12.99 US (converts to just over 9 British pounds)

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?

I don't know. something over a thousand, surely.

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

lately I've been burning more records than I've been buying, by far... I buy maybe four or five a month lately. It used to be more when I had more spare cash.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

I buy most of my records from small record stores in Manhattan, primarily Other Music, which is my favorite. On occasion, I buy something from Virgin or Amazon. Also, I've had to buy things from more obscure online stores like Insound and GEMM.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

I almost never buy anything used.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

you mean, not burned to cd? um, not much, I usually burn things, and the things I keep are things I've put there for my 'mix cd library' of songs I like to put on mixes for other people...

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

depends. some I've heard hundreds of times, some between 5-10, and others, where I've never listened to them all the way through, I only like a track or two or three...

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

all the time. not so much anymore, cos I can check things out on mp3 in advance...but I still tend to impulse buy things in shops if I've heard interesting things about it, or it's cheap and local or something.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price fora new full legnth CD?

$7-13 dollars for domestic releases, $18-22 for imports.

At a rough estimate .. 3 or 4 hundred?

shit. that's a lot.

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

um .. I'd say I average about one a week.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

For stuff I'm specifically looking for, I try a few indie shops first, and if I can't get it there, hit the internet.

Though a considerable number of my CDs have been bought in HMV/Virgin sales - they have some serious bargains every now and then.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

maybe .... 20%? But in my defence, the majority of my stuff is bought in sales rather than for full price.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

none.

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

well it depends which one, doesn't it. I don't think you could find an average - obviously it depends on how much I like them and how 'easy' (as opposed to 'difficult') the music is on by ears and brain..

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

All the time. I'm a sucker for things that look cool or have been talked about favourably in the press / in books / by other people.

Usually this pays off.

I wouldn't (and don't) pay more than about £12, unless it's something I REALLY want.

I'm far more likely to buy if it's under £10.

Say, er, you're not doing market Research for EMI or something are you?

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?

Over a thousand Albums and About 600/700 CD Singles though.

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

Erm, some, one or two a week.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

Everywhere, charity shops, Record Shops, Chain and independent.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

Not sure....

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

Soley on my Harddrive? Tsk, they've given me a CD writer at work! YAY!

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

I've listened to everything about twice. I have my favorites and my moods.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

All the time. I buy based on names, titles, associations, looks cool etc

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?

Eight pounds I think is fair. I hate paying more than a tenner for a CD, and will scout out a shop selling new releases at £10.99/ £9.99.

I also buy vinyl, but mainly second hand.

No, i'm just curious. I wanted to know how many CDs the average, hip, know-it-all barbeloid has.

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?
Maybe, 200-300 cds, 300-400 records

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

Far too many.... maybe 5-10. That embarrasses me.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

For past year I've been buying online tremendously. It's horrible. I like Forced Exposure.com(avant garde rock, free jazz, oddities, etc.)quite a bit, and Drimala.com (noise, jazz, and avantgarde) which has free shipping.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

About 20 percent

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

None.

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

I suppose this does depend on each album, but I don't think I have many things I haven't listened to at least 10 times.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

Probably 90 percent is stuff I haven't heard. Usually I buy cds from recommendations, or from certain musicians being involved. I would save a lot of money if only bought cds that I've heard before.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?

Domestic American Cds $8.00-11.00 but that's the DIY punk fan in me. I buy a lot of imports, I've been known to spend $20.00 on some German FMP label CDs, but I don't do that often. I generally find buying domestic cds for more than 14.00 atrocious, but I'm cheap.

That's funny that you'd be embarassed by how many records you buy, I usually am pretty embarassed by how *few* I own/acquire...

Well, I do look at my buying of music as a sort of habit. I'm almost never satisfied and always want to hear something new. I should really learn to appreciate what I have, because I can still hear new things in Coltrane, Derek Bailey, Boredoms, etc. every time I listen. I've actually had many discussions with my friends over how we veiw music and how "collecting" or even buying music is a commodification of it. Do I buy music because I love it? Yeah. Do I buy music because it's become something where I actually own it and in that sense make it simple commodity? I don't know, I hope not. I certainly don't view the medium of music as commodity. Do any of you have any comment? Or am I making no sense at all?

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?

More than 400 I think

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

3 or 4; depends on how expensive they are

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

I go to chain stores to get cheap stuff, but I make most of my purchases at a record shop in my town, Utopia Records. It's very traditional here, but not at all a chain store.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

Maybe 10 percent or less.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

Almost none. My connection is really slow (I even get into barbelith without downloading any pics), so downloading music is still a dream for me

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

Average? Not less than 10 times. I'm constantly listening to music.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

It depends on who's behind it. If it's a band I already know and love, like, let's say, JSBX, I will probably buy it without hearing it. But if it's a new band, I will try to hear it at the record shop first and then decide.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?

Here in Argentina the average price for a new CD is 20 dollars. Imports go to 23. They are trying to reduce the prices to 15 dollars because no one here has money even to get food.

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?

I own about 40 cds, 3,000 12"s (about 500 of which are albums) and about 200 7"s. And probably about 400 mp3s and a couple of crates of tapes...

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?

Varies wildly. If I've got bookings I'll buy about 20 singles a month. If I don't, probably 4-5. When I go back to edinburgh, where the second hand shops are better then I'd normally pick up 10-20 albums.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?

The majority of my stuff I get from specialist vinyl shops. About a third of my collection comes from charity shops and second hand dealers. I also get sent some stuff by record companies (very occasionally) and have bought online from Dustygroove once or twice.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?

Again, I don't buy cds, but about a third of my records are used. All the 7"s are second hand.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)

Nearly all the hip hop that I buy, I listen to on mp3 first as it comes out in america a couple of weeks before it's available here. Also I record mp3s onto minidisc, so probably 90% of what I listen to day to day comes from mp3 as I don't get much time to sit at home playing records.

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?

I couldn't possibly guess. Because most of my stuff is singles, probably quite a few times, but I do own some that I've only listened to once or twice. Plus I very rarely listen to albums all the way through - vinyl albums are split onto two or three discs so it's a pain in the arse.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?

Very rarely. I don't read music press, so I rely on in-shop listening to find out what I like. Dance music shops always have a couple of turntables with headphones for you to listen to stuff before you buy it. The only exception is charity shop records, which as they only cost around 50p each I will buy if they look like they might be good, or even if I just like the cover. I'd normally go on who the producer and the label are, and what period it's from - usually gives a good idea of style if not quality.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?

CDs should be used for promotional use only - plastic pieces of crap. Fair price for a 12"single should be around £4 or £6 for an import. The fact that I am sometimes forced to pay £8 just for one fucking song really gets my goat.

I do worry about my music consumption. I have more than enough records that I love to just cycle through them until I die. I wonder sometimes if I buy new stuff more because I identify myself as someone with a large and up to date record collection, rather than because I really actually want more records.

I'm actually deliberately going to give up DJing for a while as I think it's fucking with my relationship with music. I don't want to have to worry about whether something is played out or cheap, or whether it'll get people dancing. I think this is why I end up listening to my mp3s more than my records - because they're free and instant you can make really deeply personal little mixes that are exactly what you yourself want for a particular moment. Which is really what all your music should be like.

I also worry that people like me can to an extent fuck artists over. I hustle so much for free and/or cheap stuff - particularly in charity shops, that I definitely contribute far less money to the industry than someone who buys as many records as me ought to.

On the other hand I mostly buy stuff by people who get very little media attention, so I definitely support the starving artist contingent...

1) How many CDs/Albums do you own?
In the UK, about 8-900. Back home, there's about 7-800 more.

2) In an average Month, how many CDs/albums do you buy?
Three. Maybe. Usually, it's more. This month it's been about six-eight, methinks. No wonder I've got no fucking money.

3) Do you make your average purchases at a chain store, mom & popper, on the street or online?
Secondhand, usually. Failing that, it'll be something from Selectadisc/somewhere else on Berwick St.

4) what percentage of the CDs you buy are used?
A hefty one. Don't know for sure, but I tend to get stuff second-hand. At least 70%, let's say.

5) what percentage of the music you listen to exists solely on your harddrive (or initially there)
At work, about half. I've got a stack of MP3-format live boots that I listen to when I'm working. Also, work is a much faster connection.

6) How many times, on average, do you think you've listened to a particular CD in your collection?
Hard to say. I tend to fixate on stuff, so something will get listened to lots, while other stuff moulders for a while.

7) How often do you buy stuff without hearing it first?
Almost never, unless I know what the artists involved sound like.

8) what do you think is a "fair" price for a new full length CD?
A tenner. Of course, it depends on where the disc comes from/how extravagant it is, yadda yadda. I think the US prices are very appealing, compared to what gets charged here sometimes.
